QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS REMAIN UNANSWERED.

THE INVESTIC CORONATION CUP.

QUESTIONS THAT STILL REMAIN UNANSWERED IN REGARD TO THE 2009 RUNNING OF THE CORONATION CUP. ARE WE TO BE LEFT AND EXPECTED TO WATCH THE SAME THING THAT HAPPENED IN THE 2009 CORONATION CUP RACE, ALL OVER AGAIN?

What exactly happened to BUCCELLATI and WILLIAM BUICK in the 2009 running of this race?

Why were BUCCELLATI AND BUICK stopped so abruptly in seconds after they attempted to attack fast a well timed challenge to win this race by taking the distinct gap that opened up before them?

Why did they find themselves so nearly on the other side of the running rail?

Why did BUCCELLATI so nearly fall, the cause?

Why did WILLIAM BUICK pull BUCCELLATI up after this dangerous incident?

What caused this dangerous incident to happen in the first place?

And in what context did the stewards on duty that day act, or fail to act?

Did these stewards inquire the next day as to BUCCELLATI’S welfare/soundness?

BUCCELLATI was out of action due to the injuries he sustained that day in that race and out for four months, until September 2009.

Is this sort of thing to be allowed and likely to go on in any and all of the races in this years Epsom Downs Investic Festival?

John Gosden has already stated his concerns in this department. (Racing Post May 2010)

RACE READING HOW THIS 2009 CORONATION CUP RACE PANNED OUT TO BE.

Close home, and upon the instant of BUICK’S decision to make his move to secure and win this race, he asked BUCCELLATI to go for a distinct gap, BUCCELLATI response was immediate, with not a second to loose ....this race was his ....

Exciting, most exciting and so clearly achievable in that instant the winner’s name was in the frame, done and dusted one could say .... What did happen however was far worse that the recent controversy over the winner of the British 1,000 Guineas, and the French 1,000 Guineas. Both won by SPECIAL DUTY who was impeded in both races when attempting to making her challenge to the line in each race.

THE KINGSCLERE QUARTER SPRING 2010 A FOND FAREWELL ...MOVING ON .....

Who is BUCCELLATI?

“It is always a shame when the careers of high profile horses come to an end and one can only imagine, for instance, the void felt by John Oxx and his staff when SEA THE STARS departed the yard for the last time. This year we have to bid a fond farewell to two of our stable stalwarts of recent seasons BRIAREUS and BUCCELLATI.

BUCCELLATI was purchased as a yearling by Tony Noonan (a good friend and successful trainer in Australia) in the Autumn of 2005 for fellow Australian’s, Peter and Jenifer McMahon. He was bought with the specific aim of starting his race career in Europe before heading down under to continue it there and that is where he is now going, albeit a year or two later than Tony had originally intended!

Having won one of his three starts as a two year old, BUCCELLATI improved with racing through his three year old career and ended it by notching a hat-trick of wins which included victory in a £75,000 handicap at Ascot.

He improved again before his four year old year and developed into a genuine pattern race performer winning the Godolphin Stakes (Listed) at Newmarket, the St. Simon Stakes, Group 3 at Newbury, and was beaten just over two lengths into sixth place in the Hong Kong Vase,Group 1.

The highlight of his next campaign was a memorable victory in the Ormond Stakes, Group 3, which was a three runner event, run at little more than a hack canter for the first mile.

He endured a wretched run in the Coronation Cup when in the midst of launching an exciting challenge. Having nearly found himself on the other side of the running rail, BUCCELLATI did well to stay on his feet, but sadly he suffered an injury that put him out of action until September.

He still managed to finish an excellent third in the Group 1, Canadian International, on his penultimate start for the yard. He will now be trained by Tony in Melbourne and will continue to race for the McMahons and Rex and Wendy Gorell and we wish them all well with his future career."

COUNTDOWN TO INVESTEC OAKS AND DERBY EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE

REWILDING AND BUZZWORD ADDED TO THE INVESTEC DERBY AT TODAY’S SUPPLEMENTARY STAGE

Rewilding and Buzzword, both owned by Godolphin and trained by Mahmood Al Zarooni, have been added to the Investec Derby field at today’s supplementary entry stage at a cost of £75,000 each.

This boosts the prize money to £1,359,000 for the premier British Classic which is run over a mile and a half at 4pm on Saturday, June 5, at Epsom Downs.

Rewilding won the Listed bluesquare.com Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood by four lengths on May 11, while Buzzword stayed on well towards the end of the Group One Poule D’Essai Des Poulains, the French 2,000 Guineas, over a mile at Longchamp on May 16.

They join Godolphin’s Al Zir, trained by Saeed bin Suroor, who remains in the Investec Derby at the five-day stage, though Ameer and Chabal have been taken out.

Simon Crisford, the Godolphin racing manager, commented: “We have decided to enter Buzzword in the Investec Derby after he worked nicely at the weekend.

“We have wanted to try him over a longer trip ever since he stayed on so well in the French 2,000 Guineas. His work was strong and this has prompted us to go for the Derby.

“We continue to be delighted with Rewilding and also have Al Zir in the Derby. Riding plans will be announced within the next 24 hours.”

The official betting partner of Epsom Downs Racecourse, totesport, has priced Rewilding at 12/1 and Buzzword at 50/1.

There are 15 three-year-old colts, including the two supplementary entries, going forward for the 2010 Investec Derby.

The latest betting from totesport is 9/4 (from 5/2) Jan Vermeer, 4 St Nicholas Abbey, 7 (from 8) Bullet Train, Midas Touch, 15/2 Workforce, 9 Cape Blanco, 12 Rewilding, 14 Azmeel, 25 Coordinated Cut, 33 Al Zir, Ted Spread, 50 Buzzword, 66 Hot Prospect, 100 At First Sight, 150 Bright Horizon - a quarter the odds 1-2-3.

Aidan O’Brien has left all six of his representatives, including StanJames.com 2000 Guineas sixth St Nicholas Abbey, previously the ante-post favourite before drifting sharply in recent days, with stable companion Jan Vermeer now the 9/4 market leader with totesport.

The Irish trainer, who is seeking a third success in the Investec Derby following the victories of Galileo (2001) and High Chaparral (2002), is also responsible for Cape Blanco, who maintained his unbeaten record with a decisive victory in the Group Two totesport.com Dante Stakes at York on May 13, Midas Touch, winner of the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on his latest appearance, At First Sight and Bright Horizon.

“It’s looking increasingly likely that Jan Vermeer will go off favourite for this year’s Investec Derby and will surely shorten further if Johnny Murtagh decides to ride him instead of St Nicholas Abbey,” said totesport spokesman George Primarolo.

Henry Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute are the most successful current trainers in the Investec Derby, with both Newmarket handlers having enjoyed four victories. This year Henry Cecil is set to be represented by Bullet Train, the impressive winner of the Group Three totesport.com Derby Trial at Lingfield Park on May 8, while Stoute’s chance of gaining a fifth success in the Classic rests with Workforce, who was runner-up to Cape Blanco at York.

Other Derby-winning trainers likely to be represented in the 2010 renewal include John Golden, successful with Benny The Dip in 1997, who has left in Group Three Dee Stakes scorer Azmeel, while Michael Bell, who saddled Motivator to triumph in 2005, plans to run Coordinated Cut, who landed the valuable Tattersalls Timeform 3-Y-O Trophy at Newmarket in April and was third behind Cape Blanco at York.

Newmarket-based Mark Tompkins sent out Ted Spread to score in the Group Three Chester Vase on May 6 at Chester, while the Michael Jarvis-trained Hot Prospect, third Bullet Train and Coordinated Cut this season, also goes forward for the Investec Derby on Saturday, June 5.

There are good entries for the other six races on Investec Derby Day, with racing starting at 1.40pm with the Investec Vincent O’Brien Handicap.

NEWMARKET’S HATCHFIELD CAMPAIGN GIVEN LIFELINE BY NEW GOVERNMENT.

JON LEES reporting for the Racing Post (30.05.2010)

"Eric Pickles has ministerial responsibility for housing.

Campaigners against Lord Derby’s controversial Hatchfields Farm housing development in Newmarket may have been thrown a lifeline by the intervention of government minister Eric Pickles before a crucial council vote on the planning application on Wednesday (02.06.2010).

Save Historic Newmarket Action Group member Justin Wadham said Pickles,
Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, may have provided the ‘steer’ they have been expecting since the general election by confirming the intension to abolish the ‘regional spatial strategy’ adopted by the Labour
government under which the Hatchfield site was to supply up to 1,200 of the extra housing the local housing was expected to provide in the coming years.

In a letter sent on Thursday to all local authorities, Pickles said: “I am writing to you today to highlight our commitment in the coalition agreements, where we very clearly set out intension to rapidly abolish regional strategies and return decision-making powers on housing and planning to local councils.”

He said decisions on housing supply would ”rest with local planning authorities without the framework of regional numbers and plans”, adding “I will make a formal announcement on this matter soon”.

“However, I expect local planning authorities and the planning inspectorate
to have regard to this letter as a material planning consideration on any decisions they are currently taking.”

Property expert Roger Hepher, quoted in the Times, claimed that “nimbyism will run riot” as a result of an announcement, but Wadham hoped it had come in time to ensure Forest Heath District councillors do not vote through the Hatchfield plans when they meet on Wednesday. “We were waiting for a government ‘steer,’ He said.

This whole business of allocating house numbers according to a central government –dictated policy rather than devising your own policy in accordance with your local and regional needs is now out the window. That’s why we advocated a deferral.

“I just hope that it has come in time. Presumably, he has written the letter to make sure local authorities review their entire whole approach to matters. There is no housing need here. Newmarket is full of empty houses, and so is Red Lodge.

The council can’t feel that they are satisfying an actual housing demand. They only have to walk around Newmarket to see a surfeit of housing.”

JACKO FANSHAWE'S LETTER PUBLISHED IN THE RACING POST 30.05.2010

LORD DERBY’S HATCHFIELD FARM PROPOSAL

I would like to clear up one point in the article regarding the annual Newmarket Town Council meeting on Monday. (May 26)

It states that the trainer, representatives of Sheikh Mohammed, the Save Historic Newmarket Action Group and residents were accusing Nigel McCurdy, Forest District Council’s strategic director, of ignoring their views. This is not true. It is not Mr McCurdy’s job to listen to anyone’s views, and we have never asked him to do so. His job is to advise the councillors impartially on planning matters.

SHNAG have been to all planning meetings, as well as the enquiry into the core strategy.

On Monday evening, I put forward the resolution for a vote of no confidence in Nigel McCurdy regarding his dealings with Hatchfield Farm. This was done off my own initiative. I had read the Town Council’s advertisement in the Newmarket Journal. It read that the public could make statements, ask questions and make resolutions on
matters concerning the town. That is exactly what I did. It was a relief that Rachel Hood seconded it as I wasn’t sure that someone would.

There was a unanimous vote accepting the resolution from virtually everyone there.
The mayor refused to accept the resolution. Previously, she had said that we were not allowed to ask any questions about Hatchfield Farm which was absurd as the audience was full of racing’s finest. They hadn’t come to discuss dustbins.

I do not know why she got so angry, as we have worked well with the Town Council recently and admire their stance on rejecting the Hatchfield Farm development.
All we have ever asked is for fairness, and unfortunately Forest Heath district
council officers – not to be mistaken with the councillors – have denied us this.

They are hell- bent on pushing this through with scant regard to the town or the horseracing industry.

EPSOM DERBY/OAKS MEETING
FRIDAY JUNE 4th AND SATURDAY JUNE 5th 2010 www.epsomdowns.co.uk

ROYAL ASCOT MEETING runs from Tuesday June 15 throughout to Saturday June 19th 2010 over these five days. www.ascot-hospitality.co.uk

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT.
Lee Mottershead reports for the Racing Post today to wish Lewis Duke “a happy 100th, and good luck with your patent. “

“It is sometimes said that racing needs to find a younger audience. Yet it is equally important to cherish the sport’s established fans, and few are more established or remain as enthusiastic as Lewis Duke who celebrates his 100th birthday to-day.

“Duke , who began buying the Sporting Life after being demobbed from the army, has read the Racing Post since it’s birth and still has it delivered to his West Sussex nursing home on a daily basis. On the rare days when his newsagent comes up short, Duke’s son Adrian is sent on a mission to find a copy.

Once a chartered surveyor, Duke has a slight preference for jumping over Flat racing, but he enjoys both and religiously watches televised racing, although with the sound turned down. Having followed the sport since long before Golden Miller was born there are few things that pundits can tell Duke that he does not already know.

“Casting his mind back to his first punting memory , Duke says: ‘When I was about ten, my father and uncle took me to the Newmarket and Thurlow Hunt point to point and asked me to go and back the favourite for them. I had already seen a horse called Somerset in the paddock and fancied him, so I put five bob of my own on him. The horse won and that started me off.

“I still have a bet every day, but I only bother with bets on the day and don’t do anything anti – post as anything can happen - the horse – can get a stone in his hoof and not run. I have a £2.00 patent every day without fail and phone the bet through to the bookmaker. I pick out horses who have not necessarily done much in the past but could do a lot in the future .

“From all at the Racing Post, many happy returns – and many more profitable patents – to Lewis. “

BALLYDOYLE CONTENDER FOR THE 2010 INVESTEC DERBY

111-1 CAPE BLANCO (IRE) Galileo (IRE) - Laurel Delight (Presidium)
Owners, Derrick Smith, Sue Magnier, Michael Tabor.

Trainer: Aidan O'Brien IRE

Breeder: Jack Ronan & Des Vere Hunt Farms

The only unbeaten horse going into the 2010 Investec Derby, Cape Blanco is a son of
2001 Derby victor Galileo and out of Laurel Delight, a four-time winner over five furlongs for Jack Berry in the 1990s, meaning that he is a half-brother to US Grade
Two winner Mr O’Brien. A 330,000 guineas yearling, he ran three times as a juvenile,
landing a maiden over seven furlongs at Fairyhouse in June in workmanlike fashion
before going on to take the Group Three Tyros Stakes over the same distance at Leopardstown the following month by an impressive three and a half lengths.

His two-year-old season ended with a step up to Group Two company when he
contested the Futurity Stakes back over seven furlongs at Fairyhouse on August 22.
Starting at 1/5, he quickened well in the final furlong to register a length and a
quarter triumph over Mister Tee. This season began at York on May 13 when he
contested the Group Two totesport.com Dante Stakes over 10 furlongs, recognised as
one of the best trial for the Investec Derby. In the York contest, he was committed early by Johnny Murtagh, hitting the front two furlongs out, but stayed on
resolutely to defeat fellow Investec Derby aspirant Workforce by three and a quarter lengths. Race Record: Starts: 4; 1st: 4; 2: -; 3:- Win & Place Prize Money: £202,401

COUNTDOWN TO THE EPSOM DERBY MEETING FRIDAY JUNE 4th and SATURDAY JUNE 5th 2010

EPSOM DOWNS RACECOURSE COORDINATED CUT & CHAMPAGNE LIFESTYLE WORKED AT EPSOM DOWNS DURING BREAKFAST WITH THE STARS ON THURSDAY MORNING MAY 27th.

Breakfast With The Stars at Epsom Downs Racecourse, home of the world’s greatest race, the Investec Derby, today unfolded with two horses working at the course and many connections being interviewed eight days before the two-day 2010 Investec Derby Festival starts on Friday, June 4.

Coordinated Cut, trained by Michael Bell who sent Motivator out to win the Investec Derby in 2005, was due to have been ridden this morning by Investec Derby jockey Jamie Spencer in his work with stable companion Strong Vigilance, a maiden after three runs who is also owned by Lawrie Inman.

However, both Bell and Spencer were not able to leave Newmarket by helicopter this morning because of poor visibility and Ernie Johnson, who partnered the 1969 Derby winner Blakeney, was in the saddle instead.

The two three-year-olds started from the nine-furlong marker with Strong Vigilance setting a steady pace two lengths ahead of Coordinated Cut who got closer turning into the straight.

Coordinated Cut ranged up with a quarter-mile to go and led close to the finish without breaking into a sweat.

Bell said afterwards by phone: “Obviously, I would have liked to have been there at Epsom to watch the horse in action but what will be will be.

“He is a very nice horse, has a very good cruising speed and a very good temperament for a Montjeu horse. He is very easy to deal with and laid-back.

“I am hoping to get a bit of improvement out of him. I was probably too easy on him after he won the sales race at Newmarket in April as he blew very hard after finishing third in the Dante so I probably under-cooked him.

“So I am hoping for improvement fitness-wise and going over a bit further in the Investec Derby will also help him.

“We set out to win the Dante and I think he was just getting a bit lonely in the last furlong. A combination of looking around him and probably getting a bit tired did not help.

“Jamie feels that, ridden with more restraint, he would have been definitely done better in that race.

“Ridden slightly differently and fitness-wise, I hoping to get at least 6lb or 7lb of improvement out of him. Whether that is good enough to win the Derby is another matter, but we will find out on June 5.

“Nothing has yet put a mark on the race - it looks pretty open. I think our horse will run a big race. I am not saying he is going to win it but I think he will run very well.”

Bell will also be represented at the Investec Derby Festival by Sariska, last year’s Investec Oaks winner, in the Group One Investec Coronation Cup on Friday, June 4.

Bell remarked: “Sariska is in fantastic form and looks a picture. She is moving very well and did a very, very impressive bit of work last week. I am really sweet on her.”

Champagnelifestyle, trained by Barry Hills and leased by a 20-strong syndicate connected with the Racehorse Owners Association called Champagne Fridays, worked over 10 furlongs, also under Ernie Johnson.

An unraced filly by Rainbow Quest called Maroon was the work companion of this Investec Oaks hope.

Again a modest pace was set, and Champagnelifestyle cruised up to Maroon in the straight but Johnson did not want to go ahead and the two fillies finished upsides at the winning post.

Charlie Hills, assistant trainer and son of Barry, attended and commented: “We are absolutely delighted with her.

“Ernie took her over a mile and a quarter and was very happy with her. She will probably have one more piece of work before the Investec Oaks.”

Ernie Johnson added: “Coordinated Cut has a good temperament and is very professional. Champagnelifestyle went around the course well too.”

Clare Balding, who hosted Breakfast With The Stars, attended by 300 media and Epsom Downs annual members, went to Ballydoyle on Tuesday and interviewed Aidan O’Brien who trains the top four in totesport’s ante-post market for the Investec Derby.

The trainer indicated then that St Nicholas Abbey and Midas Touch are almost certain to run in the Investec Derby, with Jan Vermeer and Cape Blanco possibles at the moment, with the latter two having the Prix du Jockey Club, the French Derby on June 6, as the alternative but no firm decisions will be made until next week.

O’Brien retains faith in St Nicholas Abbey, who finished sixth when the evens favourite in the first British colts’ Classic, the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1, despite Jan Vermeer being the best-backed colt with totesport in recent days for the Investec Derby.

Ireland’s champion trainer said: “They are all exciting horses. St Nicholas Abbey was a very good two-year-old and the impressive winner of the Racing Post Trophy.

“Things did not work out for him in the Guineas - at the time our horses were running a bit in and out and he jumped, travelled a bit too strongly and got a bump from Frankie’s (Dettori) horse after 50 yards and just went into top gear. Johnny (Murtagh) just could not get him out of that gear. The whole thing was a bit of a mess really.

“Jan Vermeer was very impressive at the Curragh and Johnny was very happy with him. Cape Blanco won very easily on fast ground at York. He caught the back of his heel and was very sore afterwards but it was just a superficial. He has been fine since. Midas Touch ran well to win the Derrinstown trial and it was always intended to go to Epsom with him.

“The whole of Thoroughbred breeding is about the Derby - that is what everybody wants to breed - the Derby winner.

“All these horses are bred, fed and reared to run in the race and if they come through the trials it is very hard on the horse and its pedigree plus the owners and breeders to say don’t run in the Derby.

“We all know that there is only one Epsom Derby a year and it is all about the piece of timber (the winning post). We are in the lucky position this year to have a nice team of horses and the French Derby is the following day. The lads will make that decision - that is what they run their whole business on, winning those big races - and are entitled to split them up whichever way they want after talking to me, Johnny and everybody else involved.

“In an ideal world, we would love to have pacemakers supplied by the Jockey Club or the (Irish) Turf Club and they go an even pace and the field follows. The race unfolds genuinely and everybody gets a fair run and the best horse wins - leaving everybody happy. We are happy to get beat if the pace is even and level.”

Fame And Glory, last year’s Investec Derby second to Sea The Stars, is ante-post favourite with totesport for the Investec Coronation Cup (June 4) at 7/4, with Sariska a 2/1 chance.

O’Brien said: “Fame And Glory met a great horse in last year’s Derby. In an ideal world, we would have preferred an even stronger gallop that day. He is a great horse and I am looking forward to him running in the Coronation Cup.”

Trainer Henry Cecil has a strong hand in the Epsom Downs Classics this year, with Bullet Train in the Investec Derby plus Aviate and Timepiece for the Investec Oaks.

Speaking from Newmarket by phone, Cecil declared: “Bullet Train is a horse who is improving. He is very tough, gets the trip and I think he will act on the course.

“He does not do much at home, being laid-back and lazy. He is coming on race by race.

“Looking at the Derby at the moment, it is reasonably open and he deserves to take his chance. I think he will definitely get a mile and half and hopefully with a bit of speed left at the end.

“He has been trained with the Derby in mind ever since he won at Lingfield. He will improve for that race and do himself justice. I would like him to have a handy position in the race - he does not mind being up there - and then he can work his way into it in the straight.

“I have been enjoying the way of life for the last couple of years and long may it continue.”

Timepiece finished second in the totesportcasino.com Oaks Trial at Lingfield on May 8.

He said: “The trial I think rightly or wrongly was a funny race - they went too fast early on. I am going to have her ridden differently this time. I think she has a lot of ability.

“I think probably that Tom Queally will ride Aviate and Eddie Ahern Timepiece - he has won on her.

“Aviate is improving the whole time - she is unbeaten. Being out of that family, she has a touch of Nijinsky on the dam’s side and I think she will stay.

“Looking at the race at York, they went slowly and Aviate was in a pocket and then they quickened up. She was caught slightly flat-footed and took a bit of time to really pick herself up - that you gives you the feeling that she will be suited by a longer distance.

“The Oaks, like the Derby, looks quite open. I am not saying I am going to win it but at this stage I am very happy with the two I have got.”

Lord Grimthorpe, owner Khalid Abdulla’s racing manager, attended Breakfast With The Stars.

He commented: “Workforce will run in the Investec Derby with an Australian noseband. He is certainly on an upward curve. He is a great big horse by King’s Best. Nothing seems to bother him at all - temperament wise he is solid.

“I think there is a still a great deal of improvement in Workforce. At York it took him a while to get organised and Ryan (Moore) went to pull him out and the bit came through his mouth. He certainly was not going to win there but he would have run nearer than he did,

“Bullet Train is a very Sadler’s Wells to look at - he is related closely to Powerscourt. He has got to improve. When there was no pace, the plan was to go on anyway at Lingfield. I was very pleased with the way he put the race to bed.

“Henry (Cecil with eight victories in the Classic) has got quite a good record in the Oaks! Henry has always had a soft spot for Timepiece. She has to improve though.

“Aviate was always going to be a bit of a dark horse and has come through the ranks. When she got out of trouble in the Musidora at York, it was quite exciting as she really was in trouble. She slotted right into the gap when it appeared and I think that augurs well.

“Aviate is solid - unbeaten in three races - and is pretty straightforward but Timepiece is a bit unknown yet this season. Timepiece worked on the Limekilns at Newmarket before Lingfield and she worked all over Bullet Train - I thought something was wrong with him. So going into Lingfield, we were pretty excited by Timepiece. It didn’t quite work out and maybe she will be a nice surprise.

“Workforce has the potential to be very exciting, he is going to come on later in the year, and I have always had a strong feeling for Aviate.”

Sir Michael Stoute, not able to travel from Newmarket, said over the phone: “Workforce does not worry about much - he is pretty laid-back. We have put on an Australian noseband as a precaution - hopefully the bit coming through his mouth last time was a one-off.

“He is a bit short of experience and is just workmanlike at home which was also the case last year. He won very well on his one start last year.

“I was sorry not to be able to give him two races before the Derby because that was the initial plan but he just did not come to himself during the spring we had.

“He is a big progressive sort of horse, 16.2 hands. He has plenty of talent. He does not tell us a much at home but he is very well.”

Simon Crisford of Godolphin was another on the phone. He confirmed that Rewilding is set to be supplemented to the 2010 Investec Derby at a cost of £75,000 on Monday but Simon De Montfort probably will not be - with the French Derby a more likely destination.

He said: “We are definitely going to supplement Rewilding - he was very impressive when he won at Goodwood and we think he ticks all the boxes.

“He has got a great temperament - he appears to be bomb-proof - he definitely stays the mile and a half and he has plenty of class as well. Whether he has got enough class to win the Derby we will find out a week on Saturday.

“The big thing with him is that he seems to be improving. He took his race at Goodwood really well - he handled the track and the undulations so we are going to Epsom full of hope for a nice run.

“Al Zir and Rewilding have a bit more work to do before the Derby and jockeys will be decided next week. It is quite likely that Frankie (Dettori) will stay on Rewilding - they got on pretty well at Goodwood.

“Frankie wants to sit on Al Zir tomorrow and, after he has ridden him, we will all be bit wiser.

“Al Zir was a bit disappointing in the 2,000 Guineas. We went there thinking he had a chance and Frankie felt that slow pace did not help him at all. Al Zir went OK but it was not as good as we were hoping for. We did learn from the race that he definitely wants a longer trip.

“A mile and half might be too far - we don’t know - but a mile and quarter would definitely be his optimum trip right now and he might stay a bit further.

“Chabal will be left in the Derby on Monday. We will see what the weather does. But it does not appear that it will rain enough to give him a realistic chance. The ground at York was really quick and he did not like it at all. He might be rerouted to France or wait for a while.

“Simon De Montfort will do a bit of work at the weekend and we will make a final decision about whether he goes to France or is supplemented to the Derby after that. I think he is more likely to go for the Prix du Jockey Club.

“I think Cavalryman will be our representative in the Investec Coronation Cup. He ran well in the Dubai Sheema Classic in March and Epsom will probably suit him.”

Ted Spread is a 33/1 chance for the Investec Derby with totesport, official betting partner of Epsom Downs Racecourse.

His trainer Mark Tompkins, interviewed over the phone, said: “The more rain the better for Ted Spread, but as long as it is good ground I will be happy.

“We said over the winter that we thought he was more a St Leger horse. We went to Chester because of the ground and once he won that the Derby became a target.

“He is similar to Bob’s Return and the quicker they go the better it will be for him in the Derby. Hopefully, he won’t disgrace himself.

“I think Daryll Holland a broke collar-bone last night and we’ve had a few phone calls this morning. I would love to have Kieren (Fallon) if he was available.

“Ted Spread has plenty of ability and will come on four or five lengths for Chester. If it came up soft and they went quick enough, I would hope he could finish fourth or fifth.”

John Gosden, who sent out Benny The Dip to win the Derby in 1997, runs Azmeel this year.

The Newmarket trainer, speaking in a telephone interview, said today: “He very much needed the race in the Sandown Classic Trial and I made no secret that I had a difficult winter with him.

“Azmeel very much blew up at the one and a half furlong pole. He came on and won the Dee Stakes at Chester. The race was not really run to suit him as he got pushed back with five furlongs to run. He split horses and won in nice style, going away to win perhaps a shade cosily.

“He has done well since then and pleased me in his work at home. Running around Chester always helps handling the bends at Epsom.

“The standard of the Derby is pretty high and I certainly feel that Aidan (O’Brien) holds the aces and it is just a question of how he plays his cards.

“William (Buick) will ride Azmeel all being well. He has probably watched enough Derbys and seen enough. The one thing you want in a Derby is a horse that has natural speed to get in the position that you want to be, a nice cruising speed and is able to stay the trip.

“Gertrude Bell will stay the trip well in the Investec Oaks. It was slow-run race at Chester and she won but it was not the way she likes to race.”

Marcus Tregoning trains Rumoush, the 9/2 joint favourite with totesport for the Investec Oaks.

The trainer told Breakfast With The Stars in a telephone interview: “She worked very well at Lingfield yesterday over a mile and a quarter.

“I jus wanted her to come down the hill there and give her more experience. She came out of it well.

“I think she would have been in the frame in the 1000 Guineas but for the draw, 18 of 18.

“She has got to get the trip. I trained her half-brother Mawatheeq who is by Danzig, more and influence for speed, and he was very effective over both a mile and a quarter and a mile and a half. So I am hopeful, being by Rahy, that she will stay a mile and a half too.

“She has a reasonably relaxed way of going and a good kick at the end.”

Jim Bolger is another trainer hoping to saddle the Investec Oaks winner. He will rely on Akdarena rather than Gile Na Greine.

The Irish-based handler said today over the phone: “We hope she will stay the trip - she wasn’t stopping when she won at Naas. Kevin (Manning) set a strong pace there on her - the further they went, the better she seemed to be going. We are plenty happy that she will stay well.

“She doesn’t have to make the running as long as there is a decent pace and we will play it by ear. It was a good performance at Naas, winning by seven lengths.

“I would say that betting at the moment indicates very well the level of ability of the first six contenders (Akdarena is a 10/1 chance with totesport) and I am hoping we are thereabouts.”

Andrew Cooper, Clerk of the Course and Director of Racing at Epsom Downs Racecourse, had news of the ground.

He said: “I am very happy with the state of the ground. I would describe the going as good at the moment. We had about two millimetres of rain this morning which has helped.

“The course is in lovely condition, though it has been late coming this year. I walked the course on Tuesday and for the first time I felt it was getting there in terms of its cover and condition.

“We have had a difficult spring but are getting to just about where we want the ground to be. The recent hot weather has brought the grass on.

“In terms of irrigation, we will not do anything here until we have got Saturday out of the way. The next chance of rain is on Saturday though I sense we will not get as much as once thought.

“We can sit back for the time being before getting some up to date information on what the weather will be like next week.

“We would water on the morning of the Thursday (the day before the Investec Derby Festival starts) if we felt it was appropriate.

“One thing I have always avoided here, having had a bad experience at a quieter two-day meeting, is watering overnight - it was disaster.

“Any watering will be done and dusted before the meeting starts - I have never watered between the two days of the Investec Derby Festival and I don’t intend to start.

“I am open minded about watering next week. Our aim is to ensure that by the time we get to 4pm on Saturday afternoon (June 5), the Investec Derby is not run on ground any quicker than good to firm.”

COUNTDOWN TO INVESTEC DERBY AND OAKS FESTIVAL JUNE 4th AND 5th 2010

- 19 REMAIN IN INVESTEC DERBY

- TOMPKINS HOPING FOR RAIN

- 25 FILLIES STILL ENGAGED IN INVESTEC OAKS

– HILLS SEEKING A CHAMPAGNELIFESTYLE

The countdown to the 2010 Investec Derby Festival intensifies today 21st May with the unveiling of the latest acceptors for the Investec Derby and the Investec Oaks, following yesterday’s scratchings stage.

A total of 19 contenders remain in the premier Classic, which will boast a prize fund of at least £1,250,000 when run on Saturday, June 5. Over the past weeks, trials have been held for the Investec Derby and several exciting contenders have emerged.

There is one final chance to enter the Investec Derby, with supplementary entries having to be made by noon on Monday, May 31, at a cost of £75,000.

The last horse to win the Chester Vase en route to Investec Derby success was the mighty Shergar in 1981. A trainer hoping to change that statistic is Newmarket-based Mark Tompkins, who sent out Ted Spread to score in the Group Three contest on the Roodee on May 6.

totesport, official betting partner of the 2010 Investec Derby Festival, rate the son of Beat Hollow a 40/1 chance.

Tompkins revealed today: “Ted Spread did a bit of work on Friday morning and we are very happy with him - we just want some rain between now and June 5.

“He will stay the trip and he is an improving horse. He will have learned a lot at Chester and his temperament is bombproof - he will just stand there and pick grass.

“If it rains and the ground comes in our favour, then I would hope that he could be fifth or sixth.”

Trainer Aidan O’Brien, who is seeking a third success in the Investec Derby following the victories of Galileo (2001) and High Chaparral (2002), looks to hold another formidable hand this year with six contenders remaining. These include totesport’s current 7/4 favourite St Nicholas Abbey who was the stunning winner of the Group One Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster last season before finishing sixth on his seasonal reappearance in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 1. Cape Blanco, the 5/1 second favourite with totesport, maintained his unbeaten record with a decisive victory in the Group Two totesport.com Dante Stakes at York on May 13, while 7/1 third favourite Midas Touch could bid to follow in the footsteps of Galileo and High Chaparral having taken the Group Two Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on his latest appearance. Other possible starters from Ballydoyle include At First Sight (50/1), Bright Horizon (66/1) and Group One Criterium International victor Jan Vermeer (14/1).

O’Brien told At The Races on Thursday: “St Nicholas Abbey is in good form. Everything has been so far, so good with him and we are obviously still looking at Epsom with him.

“It was his first run of the year at Newmarket and he jumped out and was a little bit fresh. Frankie Dettori’s horse gave him a bump and got him going a bit earlier than he wanted to.

“He just maybe went into top gear a little bit early and then, when the race really started, he never got a chance to relax. The race was over by the time he started getting going but we were happy with him.

“In an ideal world, we would have preferred a better pace so he could settle, relax and get into a nice rhythm. It wasn’t to be on the day but all of the horses have been coming on a lot from their runs and we are hoping that they have come forward a good bit.

“He has always been a well-balanced horse and he has loads of speed, which we have always seen. We never thought that Epsom would be a problem for him.

“Cape Blanco is in good form as well and he has been cantering since York, while Midas Touch has been in good form since Leopardstown. They are both back in full work and we will take it day by day and see how their work goes - we are happy with both.”

Henry Cecil and Sir Michael Stoute hold the distinction of being the most successful current trainers in the Investec Derby, with both Newmarket handlers having enjoyed four victories. This year Henry Cecil is set to be represented by Bullet Train (10/1), who was the impressive winner of the Group Three totesport.com Derby Trial at Lingfield Park on May 8, while Stoute’s chance of landing a fifth success in the Classic rests with Workforce (12/1), who looks sure to come on for his seasonal reappearance when runner-up to Cape Blanco at York.

Other Derby-winning trainers who could be represented in the 2010 renewal include John Golden, successful with Benny The Dip in 1997, who has left in Group Three Dee Stakes scorer Azmeel (16/1) while Michael Bell, who saddled Motivator to triumph in 2005, could run Coordinated Cut (16/1), who landed the valuable Tattersalls Timeform 3-Y-O Trophy at Newmarket in April and was third behind Cape Blanco at York.

The Maktoum family’s Godolphin operation has three contenders going forward at the moment in Al Zir (33/1), third behind St Nicholas Abbey at Doncaster last season, Ameer (33/1) and Chabal (25/1), who landed the Group Three Classic Trial at Sandown Park on April 23 but ran disappointingly last time out behind Cape Blanco at York. A likely starter for Godolphin on June 5 is Rewilding (12/1). Previously trained in France by Andre Fabre and placed at Group Two level in April, the Tiger Hill colt made an eye-catching British debut for Mahmood Al Zarooni when taking the Listed Cocked Hat Stakes at Goodwood on May 19 impressively by four lengths. As he does not currently hold an Investec Derby entry, Rewilding will have to be supplemented at a cost of £75,000 on Monday, May 31, at the five-day confirmation stage.

The one remaining entry from France is the Freddie Head-trained Mubtassim (40/1), although Head has revealed that the colt is highly unlikely to head to Epsom Downs.

Other contenders remaining include the outsiders Averroes (200/1), Gumnd (200/1), Hot Prospect (50/1) and Trovare (500/1).

Investec Derby - totesport bet: 7/4 St Nicholas Abbey, 5 Cape Blanco, 7 Midas Touch, 10 Bullet Train, 12 Rewilding*, Workforce, 14 Jan Vermeer, 16 Azmeel, Coordinated Cut, 25 Chabal, 33 Al Zir, Ameer, 40 Mubtassim, Ted Spread, 50 At First Sight, Hot Prospect, 66 Bright Horizon, 200 Averroes, Gumnd, 500 Trovare.

* needs to be supplemented

INVESTEC OAKS ATTRACTS 25

The highlight of Investec Ladies Day, Friday, June 4, is the £350,000 Investec Oaks, run over the same mile and a half as the Investec Derby, which has 25 fillies going forward after the latest scratchings deadline.

Trainer Barry Hills has yet to capture the Investec Oaks during his long career but has gone very close on occasions, most notably when saddling both Slightly Dangerous (1982) and Bourbon Girl (1987) to finish second. This year he is set to run Champagnelifestyle (25/1 with totesport), a winner over seven furlongs at Newmarket last season who began this season by finishing third, beaten a length, in the Listed Cheshire Oaks on May 5.

Charlie Hills, assistant trainer to his father, commented: “She is moving great at the moment and we couldn’t be more pleased with her.

“Our filly Acquainted, who was in front of her at Chester, came out and won nicely yesterday at Haydock and they are both two progressive, lightly-raced fillies.

“It looks like it will be a very open Investec Oaks this year and you wouldn’t be afraid of running a filly like Champagnelifestyle in the race. She stays very well and, while she could possibly do with a bit of rain, the ground at Epsom is always a very good racing surface.”

Heading the market at 9/2 with totesport is Rumoush. Trained by Marcus Tregoning, the daughter of Rahy saw off the colts to land the Listed Feilden Stakes over nine furlongs at Newmarket in April and then stayed on well in the closing stages to take seventh behind Special Duty in 1000 Guineas at the same course on May 2.

No current trainer can match that of Henry Cecil in the Investec Oaks and the master of Warren Place looks to hold an excellent chance of landing a ninth victory in the Classic with totesport’s current 11/2 second favourite Aviate, who is unbeaten in three outings and completed her preparation for Epsom Downs with victory in the Group Three Tattersalls Musidora Stakes at York on May 19. Cecil is also likely to be represented by Timepiece, the 13/2 third favourite with totesport, who looked unlucky when fourth to Rumoush at Newmarket before taking second place in the Listed totesportcasino.com Lingfield Oaks Trial.

Jim Bolger saddled Jet Ski Lady for a shock 50/1 success in the 1991 Oaks and looks to have a leading protagonist for this year’s Classic in Akdarena (10/1), who prevailed over her elders when storming to a hugely impressive seven-length victory in the Group Three Blue Wind Stakes at Naas on May 12. Bolger could also run Gile Na Greine (12/1), who caught the eye when staying on to take third in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 2.

In total, there are nine Irish-trained entries still engaged including half a dozen from the Aidan O’Brien yard and the unbeaten Termagant (14/1), who is trained by Kevin Prendergast and was victorious in the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh last season. She is due to run in Sunday’s Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Owner Julian Richmond-Watson and trainer Ralph Beckett teamed up for success with Look Here in the 2008 Oaks and the same combination are set to run Ceilidh House (12/1) in this year’s Investec Oaks. As with Look Here, Ceilidh House completed her Epsom Downs preparation in the Listed Lingfield Oaks Trial in which she finished third.

Gertrude Bell (14/1) could bid to follow in the footsteps of 2007 Oaks heroine Light Shift, having taken the Listed Cheshire Oaks on her latest appearance. Trained by John Golden and owned by his wife Rachel Hood, the daughter of 2000 Derby victor Sinndar had Champagnelifestlye back in third when scoring on the Roodee.

The six-day confirmation stage for the Investec Oaks is on Saturday, May 29, when there is also a £20,000 supplementary entry stage.

Investec Oaks - totesport bet: 9/2 Rumoush, 11/2 Aviate, 13/2 Timepiece, 10 Akdarena, 12 Gile Na Greine, Ceilidh House, 14 Gertrude Bell, Termagant, 16 Remember When, 20 Awe Inspiring, 25 Hibaayeb, Lillie Langtry, Champagnelifestyle, 33 Cabaret, Marie de Medici, 50 Meeznah, Famous, Sajjhaa, Srda, 66 Bikini Babe, 100 Jira, Lady Lupus, Miss Miracle, Perfect Vision, Issabella Gem.

RACEHORSE COUNTRY, KINGSCLERE STEEPED IN BRITISH HORSERACING HISTORY.

In the late 1970’s Vincent’s BMW Radio 210 interviewed Ian Balding as follows:

‘If we move to the edge of Kingsclere we come to the home of Ian Balding and Ian is the Queen’s racehorse trainer.’

Question: “ Ian, lets talk first of all, a little bit, about Park House because it was built specifically for a trainer wasn’t it? ”

Ian’s reply: “Yes it was, it was built by a great trainer in fact, John Porter, just about a hundred years ago now, and he designed it I think I am right in saying himself. Certainly the stables he designed and he got one of his wealthy owners Sir Joseph Hawley to I think put up the money, but that was when it was first built.”

Question: “Why is it a good place to train racehorses?

Ian’s reply: “Well John Porter decided it was, I think, just before Park House was built. John Porter had a stable up on top of the downs (Cannon Heath Downs) and found that it was too cold up there to benefit the horses, and so he decided just at the foot of the hill of the downs here, would be an ideal place and I think he was right.”

Question: “Why? Because of the fact of the gallops are just right?

Ian’s reply: “Yes the gallops up on top of the downs that he used for many many years, and that successive trainers in Kingsclere have used since then, are marvellous. I mean that they are some of the best summer gallops anywhere in the world I would think. But the fact that the stables are situated much lower, I mean
745ft lower down just means that they are that bit warmer. Which is necessary really for racehorse.”

Question: “So it has always been a racehorse establishment since the 1880’s? “

Ian’s reply: “Yes it has, there was one period just before the war and during the war I think I am right in saying that Captain Arnold Wills owned it and at that stage it was used as a Stud Farm. But apart from that small period, when he in fact got Charles Hutchins to actually plant lots of avenues of trees and hedges. Which are still there now and are of great benefit to the horses for shelter and so on. But other than that of course it has been used for racehorses.”

Question: “Ian you are a very successful trainer, a very good trainer, what makes a good racehorse trainer ?”

Ian’s reply: “I think first and foremost you have got to be a horseman. I was very lucky I was brought up with horses. My father was a trainer and a great polo player, and really from the moment I could walk I could ride, and did ride, and in a lot of races in my younger days. So I think you have got to be a horseman to understand how horses work really, and how best to hopefully get the horses fit. But on the other side you have got to organise in my case here, anyway, a large staff and run the place so that it works, you’ve got to find owners, keep owners happy. And finally administration and office work to actually get the horses to the races and run them in the races that they are most likely to win. ”

Question: “Ian, to be a successful stable lad or jockey you have to keep your weight
around 7 stone at 18 is it because we are better fed and better brought up that it is difficult to find people like that ?”

Ian’s reply:: “ I think it undoubtedly is because even when I first started training over 20 years ago the boys came in at sort of 5 stone and they went maybe up to 7 stone when they were 18 and then stuck at about that. I remember the first good apprentice jockey that I produced was a man called Ernie Johnson who is still riding successfully now and he still does 7stone 9lb. But more recently we have had a wonderful couple looking after the hostel I mean they feed the boys extremely well and of course they just grow to big too quickly and I think that is part of the problem but its also difficult nowadays I think right from birth probably they are fed better, boys generally, and it is awfully difficult to find your 5 stone boy aged 16 which is really what we are looking for. ”

Question: “Ian you train horses for the Queen, we can all see what an enthusiastic person she is if we watch her on television. How much does she actually take part in what you do? ”

Ian reply’s: “Well I think it is inevitable she is unable to go to an awful lot of the races, but she is extremely knowledgeable, she knows exactly when her horses are running, she knows everything about those horses, she is kept in very good touch of course by her manager Lord Porchester. She is amazingly enthusiastic I think that it’s her one real hobby, and you know one would like to think that it gives her a lot of pleasure.”

Question: “ Does she often come down here and look at the horses?”

Ian reply’s: “ Well again I don’t suppose as often as she would like to, but we certainly see her probably three maybe, certainly three times a year anyway.”

Question: “Ian you have had some marvellous winners over the years is there any one horse that you have trained here that you rate above all others?”

Ian reply’s: “ Oh yes I think the general public would know probably that Mill Reef was certainly the best horse that I have trained here. I think he was the best racehorse that I have seen in my time actually, biased though I am, and what is even more exciting from my point of view because sadly the life of a flat racehorse only lasts probably three or four years, but he’s gone on to make into a wonderful stallion and we have had extremely good sons of his like Glint Of Gold, Diamond Shoal, and King of Clubs to name but three, and this is what is so exciting because although you know one tends to forget what a marvellous racehorse he was, you can see it in his offspring coming through year after year.”

Question: “ Ian, what had Mill Reef got then that perhaps other horses hadn’t ...? “

Ian reply’s: “ The extraordinary thing was about Mill Reef was that the further he went actually the faster he went, I mean I have never come across a horse with the sort of speed that he had whereby he won his first race at Salisbury for example,
over 5 furlongs in practically record time so easily, and it was the first time ever on a racecourse. He went on as you know to win the Derby and then he won King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Ascot over a mile and a half, and the Prix de Arc de Triumph at Longchamp over a mile and a half, both times in record time, and this is very very rare that you get a horse who is a brilliant sprinter as he was as a two year old who goes on to be your champion middle distance horse and I think he was the best mile and a half horse I have ever seen. ”

“Ian, thank you very much for talking to me.”

JOHN FRANCOME, known to all Channel4 horseracing viewers, now retired from professional jump race riding. John is a great advocator of the training and education of young jockeys.

"I am pleased to be the Ambassador for Racing Excellence. Good riding skills and learning to use your hands and heels instead of relying on the whip is something that I am passionate about. These training races provide an invaluable opportunity to develop these skills and I would encourage any young jockey to take part. ENDS

TURFCALL'S WARNING: The British Horseracing Authority Regulation Parties (BHA) have a lot of catching up to do in this department, due to the fact that they are nearly all ‘Bloodhorse Illiterate.’

WIMBLEDON TENNIS: All the young ones in Britain who show particular tennis talent from an early age, receive ’Tennis Coaching’ which has long been vital to their ongoing development and success. Such tennis coaching in Britain has been ongoing since 1946 the aim being to start out and play at Junior Wimbledon.

World Ranking British Tennis Stars to name just two here Andy Murray and Tim Henman will both have received such ‘Coaching’ and from an early age. Coaching that will continue on throughout their tennis careers, world wide.

This however has not been the case in British horseracing, whose preference has always been to chuck the young ones in at the deep end, and leave them to either sink or swim, a harsh reality where the horses suffer the consequences, mostly, in silence.

DAVID GOODWIN NEWMARKET IN INTENSIVE CARE

DAVID GOODWIN NEWMARKET badly injured whilst cycling, stated to be a stable groom.

Graham Green reports for the Racing Post on Friday May 21st

“As doctors yesterday prepared to bring Dave Goodwin out of an induced coma, Jean Bucknell, long term partner of the popular Newmarket stable groom who suffered head and multiple injuries in a road accident on Tuesday, said she had been overwhelmed by the response of the town’s racing community.

Goodwin 59 to-day, who led up Derby winners Slip Anchor and Commander In Chief and shared the Stable Lad of the year award in 2002, had earlier been opening his eyes on demand in the intensive care unit at Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge , where two nurses were constantly monitoring him.

Goodwin, who now works for Jeremy Noseda and is a competitive cyclist, was out training and only a mile from his home when his racing bike was in collision with a van on a blind bend in Snailwell, near Newmarket.

Bucknell said: “The phone hasn’t stopped ringing since seven this morning , and you don’t realise until times like this how people rally round, and we are getting great support from everybody.

“Jeremy is there if I need him and has been on the phone.”

The full extent of Goodwin’s injuries are not yet known, but Bucknell said he had already undergone surgery to release pressure on the brain.

She said “The main concern, which they can’t do too much with at the moment, is he split one kidney in three pieces, but they say that it has stopped bleeding now because Dave is so strong and ultra-fit.

“They are going to try to get him out of the coma to-day and then they can do a bit more on his brain and see how it is functioning.” ENDS

TURFCALL: David Goodwin is a top professional horseman of the very highest calibre, more so than many jockeys who hold British licenses to ride on the track. It is a false and grossly misleading statement to refer to David as ‘stable groom’ or a member of ‘stable staff.’

That the British Horseracing Authority Regulation Parties allow such grossly inaccurate references in regard to top, highly skilled professional horsemen goes to underline their own ignorance and ‘Bloodhorse Illiteracy.’ Big wigs who have no business to be regulating this sport for starters.

That the Burnham Report found and informed trainers to employ superstore shelf stackers to go in part time to handle and ride out thoroughbred racehorses placed in training by owners, to be paid at the minimum wage. Why was such ignorant and highly dangerous advice as this ever allowed?
