CALL FROM THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS’ ASSOCIATION

RAUSING CALLS FOR MAINTENANCE OF BREEDERS’ PRIZES

Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association (TBA) Chairman Kirsten Rausing stressed the importance of maintaining breeders’ prizes in her speech to the Association’s Annual General Meeting in Newmarket this week.

The Levy Board’s Breeders’ Prize Scheme has recently seen a second cut in funding from £1.529 million at the start of the year to £1.26 million from August 1.

“Whilst we accept this reality, racing and breeding must work together if we are to find a way to move forward,” Rausing told the AGM, this week at Tattersalls.

“The TBA considers that maintaining breeders’ prizes is quite as important as ensuring we have adequately funded prize money, a viable Fixture Incentive Scheme and sufficient resources for regulation and integrity services.”

Rausing was also keen to stress the contribution made - in various guises - by breeders towards prize money in Britain.

She added: “I believe we have finally got the message across that with the European Breeders’ Fund, Racing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme and individual stud sponsorship, breeders are net financial supporters of racing, and this year have provided £3 million in prize money, making breeders the second largest sponsor of British racing.

“That is quite apart from the contribution made by owner-breeders in terms of training fees and other associated funding.”

Rausing also pointed to the current strength in terms of prize money in France, which has a Tote monopoly and the potential impact in the future for British racing because of that.

“At the moment, the only country where breeders are adequately rewarded is France,” she continued. “Others can speak about Tote monopolies as a lost cause, but such commentators need to wise up to the implications of the increasingly unlevel playing field in Europe and the long-term effects on British racing’s ability to stage and profit from some of the best racing in the world.”

Reflecting on the past year, she particularly highlighted the recent success in lifting the ban on the importation of breeding stock from Britain to India.

“Probably the greatest lobbying success of 2009 and early this year was the removal of the Indian import restriction placed on British breeding stock, which has been in place for 15 long years,” she continued.

“This has been a long and fraught process, which I pledged to address in my first speech as your Chairman. It has taken longer than even I anticipated but, led by the TBA Veterinary Committee, we have secured a satisfactory and long-term solution to the problem caused by CEM positive non-thoroughbred horses entering the UK, mainly from Europe.

“Britain’s valuable bloodstock market is now fully open to Indian buyers and through the efforts of British Bloodstock Marketing we will ensure we take every opportunity to promote the excellence we have on offer. At this moment I should also record a note of thanks to DEFRA officials, whose support at the highest levels proved invaluable.”

The TBA’s membership of 2,473 on November 30, 2009, had fallen by 125 people on the previous 12 months and Rausing stressed the importance of bringing new younger people into the business, something that the TBA’s Next Generation Committee has been set up to address.

“As expected, this drop can be attributed to the recession and the number of mare owners leaving the industry. As our membership ages, we face an enormous challenge to correct this trend.

“In response, however, we have, through the TBA Next Generation Committee, put in place a measure to address these concerns and promote the industry to a younger audience. I accept that it will be a number of years before we see any positive effects, particularly as investment in bloodstock requires deep pockets and strong nerves.”

The TBA’s AGM preceded the Association’s Seminar, entitled ‘The Breeding Business - A Year On’.

BREEDERS WARNED OF TOUGH TIMES FOR INDUSTRY

Delegates at the 'Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Annual Seminar at Tattersalls in Newmarket this week were left in doubt about the difficult times the British racing and breeding industries are undergoing.

Speakers such as bloodstock economist John Lynam, Tweenhills Stud owner/manager David Redvers and Paul Greeves, executive director of Weatherbys, highlighted issues such as the worrying prize money situation, the industry’s over-reliance on the Maktoum family, falling foal numbers and the importance of sourcing additional funding opportunities from betting.

Lynam, who has acted as a pedigree consultant to leading breeders including Ballymacoll Stud, gave a talk entitled ‘Breeding For The Future Market - Threats and Opportunities’.

He covered a broad range of topics and - addressing the prize money concerns in Britain - suggested that those who act as ‘layers’ on the betting exchanges should be taxed by the government, as bookmakers are, to provide a new revenue for the racing and breeding industries.

“Who would bother to become a bookie now?,” asked Lynam. “Get a licence, rent a premises, pay insurance, pay taxes and hire employees? No way. Just get a laptop or an iPhone and open an account with one of the exchanges.

“My point is that the exchanges are enabling people to engage in tax avoidance. When a successful scheme of tax avoidance becomes known, the authorities take action to counter it. The breeding and racing industries need the government to take action.”

Lynam also illustrated how reliant the British bloodstock sales market now was on the Maktoum family, a situation he felt was not helpful for the future.

“Just as the Federal Reserve System in the USA, the European Central Bank in Europe and the Bank of England in the UK have propped up the financial system for the last couple of years, the Maktoum family has been bailing out the bloodstock industry .

“The industry owes them a big debt of gratitude for this. However, as you are all well aware Dubai has serious economic problems and it will be interesting to see how much the family will spend at this year’s sales. The pinhookers are optimistic as the number of six-figure foals at Tattersalls increased from 28 to 39 last year. I wish I could share their optimism.

“It is decidedly unhealthy for an industry to be so dependent on one family so it is imperative for the future of this industry that it reduces its reliance on the Maktoum family.”

Greeves introduced figures showing that numbers bred in Britain, but more markedly Ireland, were declining and predicted that the number of foals bred would continue to fall both this year and next.

Based on available data, Greeves revealed that while 5,595 foals were registered in Britain and 10,167 in Ireland in 2009, he expects those figures to respectively be 5,250 and 8,800 this year. In 2011, Greeves believes the numbers will be 5,100 and 8,100.

Registered broodmares in Britain had gone down slightly from 10,740 in 2008 to 10,624in 2009 and in Ireland from 20,038 in 2008 to 18,851 last year.

Greeves projected that the number of mares registered would be 17,000 both this year and next in Ireland, while the figures would be 10,700 in Britain this year and 10,500 in 2011.

In a new and ongoing study, Greeves revealed that Weatherbys had found that 28.6 per cent of the two-year-olds currently in training in Britain were bred by their owners.

British-bred horses made up 47.3 per cent of the 15,128 horses in training in May, with 39.2 per cent coming from Ireland and 13.5 per cent from other countries.

With the rate of decline sharper in Ireland than in Britain, where numbers have stood up better than he projected last year, the important of British-breds to British racing is set to increase.

Adrian Crichton of Weatherbys Bank spoke about prospects for the economy in general and feels there will be no sudden recovery.

“When we talk about whether we will have an L, U, V or W-shape recovery, I was an advocate of an L-shape recovery last year and I still am,” said Crichton. “I think we’re in for a long, slow, protracted haul and nothing I’ve seen in the last few years has made me think otherwise. My overall message is that we’re far from falling off a cliff but we’re just going to have to dig in because the recovery will be long and protracted.”

Redvers suggested that a solution to the financing problems could be for the racing industry to buy the Tote and, through keeping its pool betting monopoly, control a ‘super bet’ similar to that in France.

He said: “Desperate times call for desperate measures and we need to become far more political and more of a lobbying group to get a fair return to racing.

“The Quinte Plus bet in France, where the public pick the first five horses to finish in a race, turns over two billion euros a year of which 150 million euros is returned to racing - almost three times what racing gets from the Levy this year in Britain.

“We need to approach the government and say we have done everything we can but racing is on the verge of going bankrupt. Once you have the Tote, you have the means for racing to finance itself. Now is the time for racing’s trade bodies to start writing to our MPs.”

He said the PMU had betting facilities in 10,500 outlets in France and suggested the Tote should be allowed do the same.

At a lively question and answer panel that included representatives of Britain’s three sales companies and Jane Hedley, who heads the TBA’s Next Generation Committee, concerns were expressed over the leadership of racing in Britain following a question from former Racehorse Owners Association president Jim Furlong.

“I think we’re lacking leadership of the industry at present,” said Henry Beeby, managing director of Doncaster Bloodstock Sales and group chief executive of Goffs in Ireland.

“I felt that when we had Peter Savill in place, we had a leader who led from the front. But my concern is that we’d like to see some more high-profile leadership now. Maybe a lot is being done behind the scenes but we need Nic (Coward - chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority) out there leading from the front.”

Martin Mitchell, a director of Tattersalls, added: “What worries me is that Nic underplays the problems that we have at the moment. A lot more needs to be done.”

The Seminar also included a talk from British Bloodstock Marketing about the group’s work. Despite a limited budget, BBM is using resources well to attract buyers from around the globe. The organisation launched a new Internet site today.

Dr Emmeline Hill, co-founder and chairman of Equinome Ltd, was the final speaker of the day, talking about the ‘speed gene’.

TURFCALL’S RESPONSE TO THE THOROUGHBRED BREEDERS ASSOCIATION (TBA) PRADICAMENT.

How best to cope and save British bloodstock from being chucked away by personnel who are 'Bloodhorse Illiterate '? To throw away bloodlines that can never be
replaced, that have taken decades and decades, centuries to build up.

The key issue here for Kirsten Rausing is how best to cope with the ‘Bloodhorse Illiteracy’ factor, stumbling block within government, MP’s, within the British Horseracing Authority itself ( BHA) Paul Roy and Nic Coward etc, ...within racecourse management, and within the gambling section.

MILL REEF SOMETHING TO BRIGHTEN THE MORNING
Narrated by Albert Finney colour video 52 minutes.

In 1972 ‘aficionados’ of the turf waited anxiously for the ‘race of the century’ – MILL REEF, the little man as his jockey GEOFF LEWIS called him, was to confront the only horse which had beaten him in his career, BRIGADIER GERARD. Then disaster overtook MILL REEF – a broken leg whilst training on the Hampshire Downs. With the help of the world’s finest veterinary surgeons MILL REEF survived a gruelling eight hour operation . Had he beaten the BRIGADIER he might have become one of this century’s greatest racehorses. He most certainly became the best loved, for whilst he slowely recovered, telegrams and get well cards, some hand painted by children, poured into his stable at Kingsclere.

THE DUBAI WORLD CUP 2010 GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE
Started on 27 March 2010. To celebrate the 15th Dubai world cup and the opening of the iconic Meydan Grandstand and Race course the Dubai world cup will host eight races with the addition of the Group 3 Al Quoz sprint a 1200m turf race worth US$1million.

Dubai world cup now worth US$10 million is classified as 'Group 1 flat race'.
International music icons Elton John and Carlos Santana gave a 'live' performance. Contenders for the purses flew in from all corners of the world such as North and South America, South East Asia, Australasia and Europe.

HOW THIS GLOBAL SPRINT CHALLENGE CAME TO BE, DEVELOPED, AND IS STILL DEVELOPING.
As 11 of the world’s leading thoroughbreds stepped onto Dubai’s refurbished Nad Al-Sheba racecourse on 27 March 1996, one of racing’s most ambitious dreams came true. The brainchild of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai World Cup is a fitting tribute to his love of horses and of horseracing.

For more than two decades, horse owners and breeders from the Arab world have worked to establish the Arab presence in international thoroughbred racing, not only by winning top trophies in the United States, Great Britain, France and Japan, among others, but also by bringing world-class racing and breeding back to the Arabian Peninsula, the home of the thoroughbred’s renowned ancestor, the Arabian.

Horse racing began in the Emirate in October 1981, when the dusty Camel Track hosted the first thoroughbred. The race meeting consisted of three races - a sprint, a mile and a mile and a half. Just over a decade later in 1992, the now world-famous racing stable Godolphin began, followed by the inaugural Dubai World Cup meeting in 1996.

The initial Dubai World Cup race meeting put the United Arab Emirates on the map, as it has become the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and has drawn the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe.

The standard was set and history was made by the American ‘wonder horse’ Cigar, when he claimed the first Dubai World Cup. Cigar appeared to be in trouble when from last came Soul of the Matter who began to cut into Cigar’s lead. Like all true champions, Cigar called upon extra reserves and defied his rival in the final 200m. Described as a heroic battle, this encounter indeed set the benchmark for all future renewals.

With the establishment of the annual invitation-only Dubai World Cup, the United Arab Emirates became the home of one of the world’s top racing challenges, and drew the attention of millions of enthusiasts around the globe. Among the horses entered in the inaugural race was a 13-time winner from Australia, a seven-race winner from Great Britain, the ‘dirt horse’ champion from Japan, and Cigar, North America’s ‘Horse of the Year’ for 1995.

Reflective of the overwhelming generosity of the UAE and embodying the warmth of traditional Arabian hospitality, contenders for the purses are flown in from all corners of the world, such as North and South America, South Africa, South East Asia, Australasia and Europe, and horsemen enjoy generous travel subsidies for their support of racing in the UAE.

To celebrate the 15th renewal of the Dubai World Cup and opening of the iconic Meydan Grandstand and Racecourse an extension of the programme was recently announced, and the Dubai World Cup meeting will now stage eight races, with the addition of the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, a 1200m turf race worth US$1 million.

The meeting, traditionally taking place at the end of March is now worth a staggering US$26.25 million, is not just about the world’s richest race, as the rest of the eight-race card is also stacked with quality.

The Dubai World Cup, now worth US$10 million, is classified as a ‘Group 1 Flat Race’ previously run on dirt for four-year-old thoroughbreds and above, and spans a distance of 2000m (one mile, two furlongs). 2010 marks the first year this race will be run on Tapeta.

Chief supporting races are the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free and the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic - the two richest races run on turf, anywhere in the world. The newest addition to the card is the Group 3 Al Quoz Sprint, worth US$1 million, to be run over 1200m on turf. Also on the card are the Dubai Golden Shaheen and UAE Derby, both worth US$2 million, and the US$1 million Godolphin Mile, while the evening kicks off with the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Perhaps part of the Dubai World Cup’s success is not only due to the state-of-the-art race track, but the burgeoning status of Dubai as an international crossroads and global transport hub, and of course a first-class tourist destination, evidenced by more than 50,000 racegoers attending the Dubai World Cup meeting each year.

O'CALLAGHAN TARGETS DARLEY JULY CUP FOR KING

Trainer Carl O’Callaghan has confirmed that Kinsale King will remain in Britain for a probable tilt at the £400,000 Darley July Cup at Newmarket, the third British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, on Friday, 9th July.

The Irishman, who is based in the United States, saddled the five-year-old for his first race on turf in which he finished third behind Starspangledbanner in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes, the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, at Royal Ascot last Saturday.

O’Callaghan is now hoping that the stiff six furlongs of the July Course will suit Kinsale King.

The gelding, temporarily stabled at Abingdon Place on the Bury Road in Newmarket, has come out of his last assignment in fine fettle.

And O'Callaghan is ready to let his charge have a shot at turning the tables on his Royal Ascot conqueror.

He said: “For us, coming third at Ascot was like winning. My horse showed up on the day and that’s all I can ask.

“I think next time we’ll see a better performance. I am a bit concerned running him back so quick but he has bounced out of the race and is in great shape. He has been playing in the paddock and having a grand time.

“I wouldn’t stay if I didn’t think he had a chance of winning. After Ascot we did all the scopes and x-rays you can do and they were spotless.

“This time we won’t let Starspangledbanner go. I want to sit closer to him perhaps only a length behind as my horse can kick but also keep going.”

Kinsale King provided O’Callaghan with his biggest win to date in the Grade One Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan on 27th March.

The July Festival offers three days of outstanding racing action on the beautiful July Course, including the £185,000 Group One Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes on Wednesday, 7th July, and the third British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, the £400,000 Darley July Cup, on Friday, 9th July.

SPECIAL DUTY HEADS SUPERB ENTRY OF 36 FOR ETIHAD AIRWAYS FALMOUTH STAKES AT NEWMARKET

44 ENTERED IN PRINCESS OF WALES’S sportingbet.com STAKES

TOP SPRINTERS ON COURSE FOR DARLEY JULY CUP SHOWDOWN

Dual Classic heroine Special Duty is to bid for a third Group One success at Newmarket in the £185,000 Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes.

The Khalid Abdulla home-bred is one of 36 fillies and mares entered for the prestigious mile contest, highlight of the first day at the three-day Newmarket July Festival on Wednesday, 7th July.

After storming to victory in the Group One Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes in October, Special Duty returned to the Rowley Mile to give her trainer Criquette Head-Maarek a fourth win in the Group One StanJames.com 1000 Guineas on 2nd May, when she was awarded the race in the stewards’ room after suffering interference when a nose behind Jacqueline Quest.

She created history in the French equivalent, the Group One Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, at Longchamp two weeks later as she again went by the post in second but was promoted following the disqualification of Liliside.

Head-Maarek revealed today: “Special Duty is absolutely on course for the Etihad Airways Falmouth Stakes. She worked with a lead horse on Tuesday morning and she looks fine at the moment.

“We decided to give Royal Ascot a miss because she had two races in the space of 14 days and we thought that it would have been a little hard on her to go for the Coronation Stakes.

“She hit the rail coming down the hill at Longchamp and then she was looking for room in the straight, which is why she looked a little outpaced - she went from going slow to fast.

“It’s true to say that she was not interfered with at Longchamp compared to Newmarket, but she had to wait for an opening and she met trouble in running. She was behind Liliside and she couldn’t get a run until the final two hundred metres, when she flew home.

“I think that she was the best horse in both races and she has settled so well now. She looks very relaxed in her work and it’s possible that we might step her up beyond a mile at some point. The July Course is a stiff mile and there will be plenty of pace, which will suit her.

“We haven’t got the option of keeping her against her own age and we have to take on older opposition in all of the Group One races now. We could have waited and gone to Deauville with her, for the Prix Rothschild (1st August), but she would still have to face older opposition.

“Stephane (Pasquier) was with me on Tuesday morning but he still can’t put his foot down properly yet, so we won’t know until nearer the time if he can take the ride. I hope that he can be on board, but we have no idea at the moment if he will be ready for Newmarket.”

The Classic generation may also be represented by the Dermot Weld-trained Bethrah, who recorded a last gasp verdict over Anna Salai and Music Show in the Group One Etihad Airways Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh on 23rd May.

Gile Na Greine and Sent From Heaven, third and fourth respectively behind Music Show and Jacqueline Quest in the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas, may return to Newmarket, while the well-regarded Timepiece could drop back to a mile following her disappointing ninth in the Group One Investec Oaks.

Freddie Head’s brilliant miler Goldikova struck a blow for the older fillies and mares last year and the five-year-old, who notched a ninth Group One victory in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday, has been given the option of returning to the July Course.

Other notable older contenders include Sahpresa, who gave her trainer Rod Collet a first Group One victory in the Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket last October, and Grade One E P Taylor Stakes winner Lahaleeb.

44 ENTERED IN PRINCESS OF WALES’S sportingbet.com STAKES

The second day of Newmarket’s July Festival, Thursday, 8th July, is also set for an intriguing clash of the generations after 44 horses were entered for the £95,000 Group Two Princess Of Wales’s sportingbet.com Stakes over a mile and a half.

Five-year-old Mawatheeq found only Twice Over half a length too strong in the Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes on Champions’ Day at Newmarket in October, while French Group One winner Spanish Moon may line up for Sir Michael Stoute, who has also entered Group Three scorers Harbinger and Glass Harmonium.

Last year’s Ladbrokes St Leger runner-up Kite Wood and Group One Grand Prix de Paris scorer Cavalryman are among seven entries from Saeed bin Suroor, while Jukebox Jury, successful in the Group Two StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes, could return to Newmarket for trainer Mark Johnston.

Rewilding, third in the Group One Investec Derby for Mahmood Al Zarooni, spearheads an 11-strong three-year-old challenge for the mile and a half contest alongside £250,000 Tattersalls Timeform 3-Y-O Trophy victor Coordinated Cut and impressive Listed Blue Square Fielden Stakes scorer Rumoush.

TOP SPRINTERS ON COURSE FOR DARLEY JULY CUP SHOWDOWN

A total of 45 horses remain following Tueday’s scratchings deadline for the £400,000 Group One Darley July Cup, the third British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge and highlight of the third and final day of the Newmarket July Festival on Friday, 9th July.

After blitzing his rivals in the first British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, the Group One King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot yesterday, Equiano may bid for a third success at Newmarket this term. The Barry Hills-trained five-year-old has already been victorious on the Rowley Mile in the Listed Connaught Access Flooring Abernant Stakes and the Group Three StanJames.com Palace House Stakes.

Canford Cliffs, who landed the Group One St James’s Palace Stakes for Richard Hannon, may also head to Newmarket along with stable companion Paco Boy, who was beaten a neck by Goldikova in the Group One Queen Anne Stakes and was a never-nearer fourth in last year’s Darley July Cup.

A host of sprinting talent is set to be on show in the Group One Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot on Saturday and 23 of the six-day confirmations for the six-furlong contest, the second British leg of the Global Sprint Challenge, also remain on track for Newmarket.

Showcasing heads the betting for the Golden Jubilee Stakes after chasing home Prime Defender on his seasonal return in a Group Two at York’s May meeting, while Fleeting Spirit and Main Aim, first and second in last year’s Darley July Cup, are both set to re-oppose at Ascot.

International sprinters have taken Royal Ascot by storm in recent years, although only Japanese raider Agnes World (2000) has managed to prevail over the Europeans at Newmarket. The Hong Kong-trained pair of Happy Zero and Joy And Fun, along with American challenger Kinsale King and Australian mare Alverta, will be hoping for a bold show in the Golden Jubilee Stakes ahead of a possible tilt at the Darley July Cup.

THE TBA’S BREEDERS’ AWARDS DINNER TAKES PLACE IN NEWMARKET ON MONDAY

Members of the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association attending the Breeders’ Awards Dinner on Monday, June 28, get the added bonus of seeing leading stallions Oasis Dream and Dansili plus the six other sires standing at Banstead Manor Stud - Beat Hollow, Champs Elysees, Observatory, Rail Link, Three Valleys and Zamindar.

The Breeders’ Awards Dinner is held being held in Newmarket for the first time, with a champagne reception at Banstead Manor Stud before members and guests sit down in the Green Room at Tattersalls.

Juddmonte Farms, which owns Banstead Manor Stud, is sponsoring the whole evening and will parade all eight stallions based there.

Louise Kemble, Chief Executive of the TBA, said today: “The annual awards have been previously announced at a lunch in London after the Annual General Meeting in early January and we have changed arrangements this year to better reflect our members’ interests.

“Thanks to the support of Juddmonte Farms, we are having an evening with a difference on Monday and everyone is looking forward to the reception followed by the dinner at which the 2009 winners of our 15 awards will be honoured.”

A media release detailing all the winners of the awards will be sent on an embargoed basis on the morning of Monday, June 28.

The Annual General Meeting has also moved to Newmarket and takes place the following morning, Tuesday, June 29, at Tattersalls, beginning at 9.45am and finishing at 10.30am.

Following the AGM, the TBA hosts a seminar entitled “The Breeding Business - A Year On” in the sales ring at Tattersalls.

Starting at 11am, the seminar will feature first of all a presentation from Adrian Crichton and Paul Greeves of Weatherbys on the issue of the economy and bloodstock.

The next speaker is David Redvers, bloodstock agent, owner of Tweenhills Stud and one of the instigators of the Racing Post Yearling Bonus Scheme. David will offer his perspective on the current state of the sales market.

He is followed by bloodstock economist John Lynam, who will give a personal view on the opportunities and threats faced by the bloodstock industry.

A discussion session led by the panel of experts concludes the morning.

Following a buffet lunch, British Bloodstock Marketing outlines its international marketing plans to support the breeding industry.

The day concludes with a presentation from Dr Emmeline Hill of Equinome, who will talk about the opportunities for maximising the genetic potential of the racehorse.

A media release will be issued on Tuesday, June 29, with details of what went on during the AGM and the seminar.

ASCOT WINNERS ROYALLY REWARDED IN LATEST CARTIER RACING AWARDS STANDINGS

CARTIER RACING AWARDS

ASCOT WINNERS ROYALLY REWARDED IN LATEST CARTIER RACING AWARDS STANDINGS

Royal Ascot, the most majestic of English sporting occasions, last week proffered a typically prodigious portion of pageantry, grandeur and sartorial splendour alongside a feast of top-class horseracing, leaving Cartier Racing Awards observers brimming with anticipation at what further treats might await during the coming months.

The Cartier Racing Awards recognise excellence in horseracing and the awards are the sport’s equivalent of the Oscars. They are determined by points earned in Pattern races combined at the end of the season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists, as well as votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph. This is a system which has accurately rewarded supreme excellence over the years.

European horseracing’s most prestigious accolades will be presented for the 20th time on November 16, during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience in the ballroom of London’s Dorchester Hotel.

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to recognise the achievements of racehorses in Europe. There is also the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit for the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 18-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

The Richard Hannon-trained crack three-year-old miler Canford Cliffs was among the stars of the five-day meeting and added a little extra shine to his shimmering reputation with a dazzling length victory over stable companion and StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas runner-up Dick Turpin (72 points) in the St James’s Palace Stakes on June 15.

The Classic-winning Tagula colt, triumphant in the Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas, emphatically reversed form with StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas hero Makfi (equal with Investec Derby winner Workforce on 56 points) in taking the Group One prize under a confident Richard Hughes ride and leaping to the head of both the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt and Cartier Horse of The Year categories with 108 points.

Lope De Vega, imperious when adding the Group One Prix du Jockey Club to his earlier Poule d’Essai des Poulains win, is second in both divisions with 98 points as he prepares for a mooted head-to-head with the Freddie Head-trained Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August.

The great Goldikova (64), the 2009 Cartier Older Horse heroine, was also in supreme form on day one of the Royal meeting, June 15, as she clinched a ninth career Group One success when holding on for a neck verdict over the Hannon-trained Paco Boy (64) in the Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile.

But, for the moment at least, that pair trail the Andre Fabre-trained Byword in the Cartier Older Horse category. Owner Khalid Abdullah’s colt was half a length behind Goldikova in the Group One Prix d’Ispahan on May 23, but the rising star landed a smooth success under Maxime Guyon in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot on June 16, to take his points haul to 80.

With Royal Ascot legend Yeats, a four-time winner of both the Gold Cup and the Cartier Stayer Award, having retired to stud, the door was left open for a new contender to lay down a gauntlet in the division. The Dermot Weld-trained Rite Of Passage (48), placed in Grade One company over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival in March and sent off a 20/1 shot for the two and half mile showpiece on Thursday, June 17, clinched pole position with a battling neck verdict over another Irish-trained runner Age Of Aquarius (28).

The Cartier Sprinter Award is invariably a hotly contested prize and this year looks like being no exception with Equiano and Starspangledbanner currently sharing top spot with 48 points. The Barry Hills-trained Equiano landed a second Group One King’s Stand Stakes victory on June 15, having prevailed in the five-furlong contest in 2008, while Australian import Starspangledbanner impressed in the Group One Golden Jubilee over six furlongs on Saturday, June 19, for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The James Fanshawe-trained Society Rock, runner-up in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, has 24 points, while Markab, second in the King’s Stand Stakes, has 20 points.

The O’Brien-trained Lillie Langtry suffered a potentially career-ending injury after the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf in November but bounced back to her best with success in the Group One Coronation Stakes at the Royal Meeting on June, 18. The Danehill Dancer filly has 48 points in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly division, the equal of Investec Oaks winner Snow Fairy.

The 2009 Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award went to Special Duty and the Criquette Head-Maarek-trained dual Classic winner heads the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly category with 98 points, but closing in on her is fellow French-trained contender Sarafina. Alain de Royer-Dupre’s charge now has 64 points after complementing her Group One Montjeu Coolmore Saint-Alary victory with Classic success in the Group One Prix de Diane at Chantilly on June 13. Abu Dhabi Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Bethrah has 52 points.

Royal Ascot offers the first major test for the season’s two-year-olds and the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned Approve impressed when winning the Group Two Norfolk Stakes for trainer William Haggas on June 17. But perhaps more stunning was the victory of the Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit who overcame significant interference to land the Group Two Coventry Stakes in the dying strides on June 15. Those two are locked together on 16 points at the head of the Cartier Two-Tear-Old Colt category.

Maqaasid, trained by John Gosden, has a clear lead in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly division after she overhauled Meow (8) to win the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes on June 16. Also on eight points is Group Three Albany Stakes winner Memory, trained by Hannon for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented today: “Royal Ascot, as always, has served up a thrilling five days of racing with stunning performances mingled with the heroic.

“The week’s results have certainly shaken up the 2010 Cartier Racing Awards standings and we now have a slightly clearer picture as to who could ultimately prove to be the season’s standout performers.

“We witnessed some exciting displays last week from Goldikova, Canford Cliffs, Rite Of Passage, Starspangledbanner and Byword among others and, given the excellent array of talent before us this season, I think we are all perfectly justified in anticipating more stunning races in the coming weeks at the Curragh, Sandown Park and during Newmarket’s July Festival.”

LATER THAN USUAL ENTRY STAGE FOR LADBROKES ST LEGER

BELL COORDINATES LADBROKES ST LEGER PLAN

LATER THAN USUAL ENTRY STAGE FOR LADBROKES ST LEGER

Entries for the £500,000 Group One Ladbrokes St Leger must be made by noon on Tuesday, July 20, and one horse that is likely to be among those seeking victory in the world’s oldest Classic at Doncaster on Saturday, September 11, is the Michael Bell-trained Coordinated Cut.

This year’s closing date for entries is three weeks later than has been the case in recent years, with Doncaster Racecourse keen to allow trainers and owners more time to assess the merits of their horses.

Coordinated Cut could head to the extended mile and three quarters Classic after contesting the Group One Irish Derby over 12 furlongs the Curragh Sunday,June 27.

The Montjeu three-year-old won the £250,000 Tattersalls Timeform 3-Y-O Trophy over a mile and a quarter at Newmarket in April before coming home third to Cape Blanco in the Group Two totesport.com Dante Stakes the following month.

Coordinated Cut, whose owner Lawrie Inman saw his colours carried to third place in the 2009 Ladbrokes St Leger aboard Monitor Closely, finished seventh to Workforce on his most recent start in the Group One Investec Derby,
over a mile and half at Epsom Downs on June 5.

Bell, who took over the colt’s training from Peter Chapple-Hyam at the end of last season, said: “Coordinated Cut will almost certainly have an entry in the Ladbrokes St Leger.

“He is running in the Irish Derby this weekend and is in good form at present. The track at the Curragh will suit him much better than Epsom, so hopefully we will be able to get a true handle on what real level of ability he has.

“He won at Doncaster as a two-year-old, so the question regarding the Ladbrokes St Leger is whether he will truly stay a mile and six furlongs. On pedigree, that is open to debate, so it will be interesting to see how well he stays on at the Curragh.

“How well he gets a stiff mile and a half there will be a key as to whether the Ladbrokes St Leger is the race we target.

“He is out of an Arazi mare, so there is a bit of speed on the dam’s side. He doesn’t smell of being a mile and three quarters horse on the dam’s side but he is a big, long, scopey horse, so he may well stay, although there are no guarantees.”

NEWMARKET’S TNT JULY STAKES ON AGENDA FOR COVENTRY STAKES RUNNER-UP ELZAAM

Trainer Michael Jarvis is considering letting his exciting juvenile Elzaam take his chance in the £70,000 Group Two TNT July Stakes (2.00pm), one of the highlights of the second day of the Newmarket July Festival on Thursday, 8th July.

The Australian-bred, Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt gave his sire Redoute’s Choice a first northern hemisphere winner on 13th May when posting an impressive all-the-way success in a six-furlong York maiden.

He followed up that victory by going down by a nose to the current ante-post favourite for next year’s Stan James-sponsored 2000 Guineas, the Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit, in the Group Two Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot on 15th June.

Jarvis revealed today: “Elzaam is a possibility for the TNT July Stakes at the moment - there are one or two options open for him and the July Festival would obviously come into the reckoning.

“He’s come out his run at Royal Ascot in A1 shape and I was very pleased with his performance there. It was a high-class renewal of the Coventry Stakes and he ran a super race.

“He was out in front for quite a long time and he did start to look around a bit in the last half-furlong. While Strong Suit would have probably have been judged unfortunate if he didn’t get up, I think if Elzaam hadn’t idled a little bit in front, then we might have won.

“He was only having his second start and we were very happy with him - he is a decent horse.

“If we were to meet Strong Suit again in the TNT July Stakes, I would be hopeful rather than confident that we could turn the tables. We would be getting 3lb but he looked value for a bit more and I wouldn’t be looking to take him on again.”

THE ARORA HOTEL TROPHY = ‘GOLD ARM BAND’ = TOP JOCKEY AT ROYAL ASCOT 2010 .......? At the close of Royal Ascot yesterday (17.06.10) with two further days and twelve more races to be won, Willie Carson’s advice is that the riders/jockeys who have two wins on the board already have the most likely chance of winning this competition.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Royal Ascot has long since been renowned as a tricky place to pick the winners.

Richard Hughes riding for Richard Hannon last Tuesday (15.06.2010) oh so nearly pulled off a treble. But had to settle for a double, and a second with Paco Boy, just touched off by Goldikova 11/8 fav. What a truly fantastic performance for trainer Richard Hannon to achieve in one day, at Royal Ascot, all with the help of Richard Hughes his retained jockey, and so, so many others who go to make up his Multi Talented and Exciting Team at Home.

LET THE HORSES DO THE TALKING, IF YOU CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE HORSES ARE SAYING YOU WILL KNOW FOR SURE THAT YOU ARE BLOODHORSE ILLITERATE.

THEORY

British Horseracing Authority personnel way off the pace in the Horsemanship Stakes. Out of touch, and out of tune with all the key providers of British Horseracing to include the horses.

PRACTICE:

The outstanding achievement on this the second day at Royal Ascot, must surely be the performance given by BYWAYS & MAXIME GUYON to win the 3.50 Prince of Wales’s Stakes worth £255,465 to the winner. BYWAYS trained by A FABRE (FR) for owner K ABDULLA 5/2 fav. Fabre confirmed that this was Guyon’s first ride at Royal Ascot, that he was absolutely delighted with the result, confirming that “he (Guyon) managed to succeed in getting a clear run for BYWAYS throughout the race, no problem, riding with his hands, and heels, balance and timing in preference to using the whip.” MAXIME GUYON so ... so young, yet has that certain quiet charm and flair to match his exciting talent. REVIEW ROYAL ASCOT 2010 DAY ONE TUESDAY 15 JUNE 2010

ROYAL ASCOT OUTSTANDING DAILY ACHIEVEMENT AWARD = ‘GOLD ARM BAND’ BUT WHERE IS THE FINANCIAL REWARD TO GO WITH THIS ‘GOLD ARM BAND’?

LET THE HORSES DO THE TALKING.

The Royal Ascot ‘ Gold Arm Band’ initiative for the leading rider/jockey at Royal Ascot 2010. To give this initiative the credibility that is deserved, it needs to include a significant financial reward also for ‘Outstanding Team Achievement’, to the winner’ In the region of £200.000. (Two hundred thousand pounds)

THEORY.
The way that the British Horseracing Authority is being run at present with Paul Roy (Chairmen) Nick Coward (Chief Ex) both Bloodhorse Illiterate. Bearing in mind the massive remuneration both take out of this sport each and every year. Surely they can between them stump up the first £200,000 for this years Gold Arm Band winning jockey and trainer team?

British Horseracing Authority Remuneration out of all proportion to the stark reality born by so many who keep the Sport of British Horseracing on track at the dangerous sharp end, each and every day for scant reward.

TOMMO’S GREAT SCOOP6 NEWS .....
All members of Derek 'Tommo' Thompson's Syndicate on www.iScooped6.co.uk won a share of this weeks Scoop6 Win Fund by correctly selecting all 6 winners along with 11 other lucky tickets in this weeks Scoop6... The syndicate selections are on the website:

http://www.iscooped6.co.uk/ViewClosedSyndicate?id=a09300000056ZyCAAU

A payout of £5,628.40 is a healthy return for the £384 stake (192 lines), and 1 of them struck lucky! But what's better is the shot at next week's bonus fund and chance to add as much as £50,000 to the total amount which will be distributed among syndicate members if we win!

Congratulations to all syndicate members! If you didn't play this week, make sure you join in the fun for next week by registering now from just £5.50... it's great value considering how much fun it was to cheer in the winners last Saturday, and we will be cheering even harder next week for the bonus race!!!

REVIEW:
LAST WEEKEND'S EPSOM DOWN'S INVESTIC DERBY AND OAKS MEETING.
Fabulous racing. A great work of art achievement created by all the many sections that go to make up the Whole British Horseracing Experience.

SNOW FAIRY partnered by RYAN MOORE, minded and presented by LYNSEY HANNA won the OAKS at 9/1 by a neck from MEEZNAH
SNOW FAIRY Owned by Anamoine Ltd, and trained by Ed Dunlop in Newmarket.

WORKFORCE partnered by RYAN MOORE minded and presented by PAUL GRASSICK set the Derby scene alight with an electric performance, winning the Derby at 6/1 by 7 lengths from AT FIRST SIGHT. Ryan scored in both the Oaks and the Derby a fantastic work of art achievement. WORKFORCE Owned by Khalid Abdullah, and trained by Sir Michael Stoute in Newmarket, the true heart and home of British Horseracing.

EXCITING NEWS
Our own Queen Elizabeth (Hostess at Royal Ascot 2010 over 5 days from Tuesday June 15through to Saturday June 19th ) in her Birthday Honours List has awarded A.P.(Tony) McCOY an OBE. McCoy's achievements as a Professional National Hunt Jockey ( Over Hurdles and Fences) reached a peak this year when he won the Grand National at Aintree, for the first and only time to date, in 15 years, partnering DON'T PUSH IT.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT
Who are the Rules of British Horseracing made and kept up for?

Made so as the regulation parties can understand them, but no one else?

In all sport rules are configured, upheld and updated to ensure 'Fair Play'

Fair play in all sport is paramount, otherwise it is not a sport.

Why is this not being adhered to properly in this sport that is British Horseracing?

Eg, most of the people who are attending the World Cup Football at present, are fully aware of the rules. As are those who are shortly to visit the Wimbledon Tennis. There is no reason whatsoever that Horseracing World Wide should be any different.
