Jim worked until very recently with Phil Bull’s Timeform. Read PHIL BULL the biography. Researched and compiled by HOWARD WRIGHT (Racing Post).
First published in 1995 by Portway Press Limited Halifax.
ISBN Number 0 – 900599 – 76 – 6
PHIL BULL born in 1910 the son of a miner and a schoolteacher, was brought up in West Yorkshire, educated at Hemsworth Grammar School, he graduated from Leeds University with a degree in mathematics . He taught the subject in London in the early 1930’s, but used it to greatest effect as the basis for betting on horses.
The most successful punter of the era, he became a noted writer and a leading owner – breeder. He first published Timeform in 1948, and remained associated with the Halifax – based company until his death at the age of 79 in 1989.
As well as making his own fortune out of betting – and helping others to do the same – Phil Bull lived through the period of greatest change in Turf history. His trenchant comment and criticism contributed greatly towards the post - war revolution in racing administration.
Bull: The Biography plots the various ups and downs of his personal life, and charts the many changes in racing, in a skilful record which combines meticulous scholarship and penetrating insight.
It brings together for the first time the many sides to the character of a remarkable man – mainly in his own words.
HOWARD WRIGHT the Racing Post A native of Doncaster, he made a brief working excursion to London before joining Timeform in 1964, at the age of 18. It was the start of a lifetime career in racing journalism.
