The StanJames.com Guineas Festival, sponsored since 2006 by one of Britain’s leading
independent bookmakers and featuring the first two Classics of the British Flat
racing season, will see the attention of the international racing community focused
on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse on Saturday, 1st May and Sunday, 2nd May.
The Rowley Mile is arguably the most historic major sporting venue in the world
today. Named after Old Rowley, a nickname given both to Charles II and his faithful
hack, the Rowley Mile has hosted Flat racing for three and a half centuries. This is
where the Sport of Kings as we know it today was born and it is on this same world-famous strip of turf that countless equine champions have been crowned ever since.
From the Rowley Mile, racing spread around the globe. The first racecourse in
America, for instance, was created by Charles II’s governor in New York in 1665 and
named “Newmarket” after Charles’s beloved Suffolk town, where he would move the
Royal court each year so that he could indulge his passion for racing.
The unique, straight Rowley Mile course is largely unchanged since that time - just
the stands are new – and it is on this hallowed turf that the latest champions will
emerge at this year’s StanJames.com Guineas Festival. The StanJames.com 2000 Guineas
for colts (started 1809) is being run for the 202nd time and The StanJames.com 1000 Guineas for fillies (first run in 1814) is almost as old, being run for the 197th
timein 2010. Run over a mile, they represent the first big test for the three-year-
old generation. The Derby, Oaks and St Leger follow later in the season - it is at
Newmarket that reputations are put on the line for the first time. Many of the greatest names in the history of the turf have triumphed in these historic races,
including in the modern era the likes of Nijinsky, Brigadier Gerard, Dancing Brave,
Nashwan, Oh So Sharp, Pebbles, Miesque and the latest superstar, Sea The Stars, in
2009. The 2010 StanJames.com Guineas Festival carries over £1.35m in prize money
across its 14 races, with each StanJames.com Guineas worth £400,000.
No racecourse in the world can match Newmarket’s Rowley Mile for its heritage,
history and sheer authenticity. The ‘cutting edge’ relevance of its location to Flat
racing in the 21st century remains as strong as ever - the town of Newmarket is the
biggest racing centre on the planet. To visit it is to feel the heartbeat of British
racing. Some 2,500 racehorses are trained in and around the town by 70 licensed
trainers who bring them to peak fitness on the world’s largest training grounds of
2,500 acres. More than 60 stud farms are located around Newmarket, producing some of
the most regally-bred racehorses to grace the turf, not to mention the magnificent Jockey Club Rooms, the National Horseracing Museum, National Stud, British Racing
School, Tattersalls sales ring, the Animal Health Trust and the headquarters of
numerous racing and breeding organisations.
Newmarket, which has more Group and Listed Races than any other course in Britain,
is as Lord’s is to cricket, as Twickenham is to rugby union and as Wembley is to
football. It is the ‘Home of Racing’ and the StanJames.com Guineas Festival is one
of the jewels in its crown. This is the event at which the British Flat racing season explodes into life and three and a half centuries of history reverberate
across Newmarket Heath as the first Classic winners of the season are hailed on The
Rowley Mile, the “Course of Champions.”

NEWMARKET TIMELINE
1200-Newmarket is born. The area in which Newmarket now stands was given as a dowry
to Sir Richard de Argentein in 1200 when he married Cassandra, daughter of Robert de
Insula, Lord of the Manor of Exning. Sir Richard encouraged development of the town and was almost immediately granted a charter to create a “new market” by the King.
1605-Royal discovery of Newmarket Heath. In February, 1605, King James I arrived in
Newmarket from Scotland, discovering the heath while hunting hare with his hounds. He recognised its potential as a great leisure venue for his court, as the open
heathland and spring turf suited his equestrian interests.
1622-First Race. The first recorded race at Newmarket took place on March 8, 1622.
It was a match race between a horse belonging to Lord Salisbury and a horse belonging to the Marquis of Buckingham. Buckingham’s horse won, securing a prize
worth £100, which was an enormous sum at the time. 1660-Charles II arrives in Newmarket. Charles II, known as the “Merry Monarch”, began his twice yearly visits
to Newmarket to pursue his passion for the turf. He built Palace House and moved the
Royal court to Newmarket every year. Charles was a keen rider and rode at what is now called the July Course on a regular basis. However, in early spring and late
summer the sun was a problem as it kept getting in his eyes. He found a new stretch
of turf for these months of the year, which is now the site of the Rowley Mile. Charles's favourite hack was called Old Rowley, a nickname that was also given to
the king himself. Hence the Rowley Mile Racecourse was born.
1664-Town Plate is instituted. Charles II decreed by an Act of Parliament in 1664
that the Town Plate be run every October. It was the first ever race under written rules, with the inaugural running taking place in 1666. Charles II rode his own
horse to victory in the race in 1671, receiving a prize flagon worth £32. It is
still run at Newmarket every year and is the world’s oldest surviving horse race.
1665-Newmarket Exported to America. Richard Nicolls, who was appointed as Governor
of New York by Charles II, created the first ever racetrack in America which he called “Newmarket” after Charles’s beloved Suffolk town. The site of the old
Newmarket racecourse is on the Hempstead Plains just outside New York City, just a
few miles from one of the great USA tracks of the modern era, Belmont Park.
1750-Jockey Club comes to Newmarket. Horse racing’s elite members met at Newmarket
to form the Jockey Club to oversee and control English horseracing. The Jockey Club
wrote a comprehensive set of rules for horseracing and sanctioned racecourses to conduct race meetings under their rules. The Jockey Club moved to London in the
1960s, but the magnificent Jockey Club Rooms remain in a very prominent position on
1762/1771-Start of Newmarket’s Racing Fixtures. The second half of the 18th century
saw Newmarket flourish with the establishment of fixed annual race meetings. During
these years, the Spring and Autumn meetings were constantly augmented by new
fixtures, all of which still survive today. 1809-2000 Guineas inaugurated. This year
sees the 202nd running. 1814-1000 Guineas inaugurated. This year sees the 197th
running. 1914 – 1918 & 1939 – 1945 War Years. Newmarket’s July Course was used and
staged most of the major races. The Rowley Mile course became an RAF base.
1929-Tote. Newmarket’s July Course was the first to introduce the Tote, where it was
regarded with some bafflement and caused considerable panic amongst the bookmakers! The first-ever Tote dividend was a pretty handsome sum of 80 shillings sixpence
to a two shilling stake.
1949-Photo-Finish. The 2000 Guineas of 1949 was the first ever race to have a photo-
finish camera to help determine the winner.
1965-Starting Stalls. Newmarket’s July Course was the first course to use starting
stalls.
2000-Millennium Grandstand Opens. On May 6, 2000, the new Millennium Grandstand at
Newmarket’s Rowley Mile was opened by The Queen. The Grandstand boasts state-of-the-art facilities for racegoers on racedays as well as superb facilities for a wide
range of corporate events.
2006-Stan James enters the first year of Guineas Festival sponsorship. Stan James,
one of Britain’s leading independent bookmakers, sponsors all the races at the Guineas Festival in the biggest sponsorship deal in the history of Newmarket
Racecourses.
2009-Sea The Stars begins his epic run of six straight Group One victories with by
taking the Stan James-sponsored 2000 Guineas in emphatic style.
The StanJames.com 2000 Guineas – Facts and Figures
The 2000 Guineas was first run in 1809 and won by Wizard. His connections - trainer
Tom Perren, owner Christopher Wilson and jockey Bill Clift - were also responsible for the first 1000 Guineas winner, Charlotte in 1814.
The Classic, run over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course, is for three-year-old colts
and fillies. Few fillies, who carry 5lb less than colts, run in the 2000 Guineas and just seven have been successful - Pastille (1822), Crucifix (1840), Formosa
(dead-heat with the colt Moslem in 1868), Pilgrimage (1878), Shotover (1882), Sceptre (1902) and Garden Path (1944).
The largest 2000 Guineas field was in 1930 when there were 28 runners in the race won by Diolite while 27 ran in 2000,
1964, 1951 and 1933. In both 1829 and 1830 there were just two competitors, with
both winners - Patron and Augustus-owned by Lord Exeter and trained by Charles Marson. The maximum field allowed for safety reasons is currently 30.
Since 1900, the longest winning distance in the 2000 Guineas was recorded in 1947 by
Tudor Minstrel, who scored by eight lengths. During the same period, the Classic has
been won by a short-head a dozen times - Neil Gow (1910), Kennymore (1914), Adam’s Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943), Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only
For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966), Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) and, most recently, Mark Of Esteem (1996).
The victory of Henrythenavigator in 2008 was the first time that a British Classic
had been won by a nose – the new minimum winning distance introduced by the BHA less than three months earlier.
The longest-priced winner in the history of the 2000 Guineas was 1961 hero Rockavon,
who was returned at 66/1. Not nearly so generous were the odds of 12/100 laid on St Frusquin in 1896 - the shortest-priced winner.
In the 201 runnings to date, a total of 79 favourites or joint-favourites have
obliged in the 2000 Guineas - just under 40% of winners have headed the betting market. Favourite backers have not had such a good time over the last 18 years.
George Washington, successful in 2006 at 6/4, became the first favourite to oblige since Zafonic at 5/6 in 1993.
Irish-trained horses have won 13 renewals of the 2000 Guineas since 1900. The first
was 1960 winner Martial, trained by Paddy Prendergast, and he has been followed by Sir Ivor (1968 Vincent O’Brien), Nijinsky (1970 Vincent O’Brien) Nebbiolo (1977)
Kevin Prendergast Lomond (1983 Vincent O’Brien), El Gran Senor (1984 Vincent
O’Brien), King Of Kings(1998 Aidan O’Brien), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002 Aidan O’Brien),
Refuse To Bend (2003 Dermot Weld), Footstepsinthesand (2005 Aidan O’Brien), George Washington (2006 Aidan O’Brien), Henrythenavigator (2008 Aidan O’Brien) and Sea The
Stars (2009 John Oxx). Since 1900 there have been 11 winners trained in France. They
are 1933 Rodosto (trained by Harry Count), 1937 Le Ksar (Frank Carter), 1940 Djebel
(Albert Swann), 1952 Thunderhead II (Etienne Pollett), 1959 Taboun (Alec Head), 1964 Baldric II (Ernie Fellows), 1966 Kashmir II (Charles Bartholomew), 1974 Nonoalco
(Francois Boutin), 1982 Zino (Francois Boutin), 1994 Zafonic (Andre Fabre) and 1995 Pennekamp (Andre Fabre).
The first horse to complete the 2000 Guineas/Epsom Derby double was Smolensko, owned
by Sir Charles Bunbury, in 1813. Since then a further 35 horses have completed this
double, the most recent being Sea The Stars in 2009. Sir Michael Stoute, responsible for the 2000 Guineas winner Golan in 2001, is the joint-most successful current
trainer with five victories. His other four winners were Shadeed (1985), Doyoun
(1988), Entrepreneur (1997) and King’s Best(2000). Irish handler Aidan O’Brien equalled the tally of the Newmarket handler in 2008 when Henrythenavigator got the
better of New Approach in a thrilling finish. The master of Ballydoyle had
previously scored with George Washington(2006), King Of Kings (1998), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) and Footstepsinthesand (2005). Richard Hannon has saddled
three winners - Mon Fils (1973), Don’t Forget Me (1987) and Tirol (1990).
The most successful jockey of the current generation in the 2000 Guineas is Kieren
Fallon with four wins. Fallon has ridden the winner in four of the last nine years with George Washington (2006), Footstepsinthesand (2005), Golan (2001)
and King’s Best (2000).
The record time is 1m 35.08s, set by Mister Baileys in 1994. Last year’s race was
won by Sea The Stars in a time of 1m 35.88s.
Queen Elizabeth II owned the 1958 winner of the 2000 Guineas, Pall Mall, while her
great-grandfather, King Edward VII,owned both the 1900 victor Diamond Jubilee (when he was the Prince of Wales) and Minoru, successful in 1909.
The StanJames.com 1000 Guineas – Facts and Figures
The inaugural running of the 1000 Guineas, for three-year-old fillies, took place in
1814. The Classic was won by the 11/5 favourite Charlotte, who beat four rivals.
Four fillies have completed the 1000 Guineas/2000 Guineas double. The last was
Sceptre in 1902, who was also successful in the Oaks and St Leger. The other fillies to win both Newmarket Classics are Crucifix (1840), Formosa (1868 and Pilgrimage (1878)
In 1825, the Duke of Grafton’s Tontine was the sole participant in the 1000 Guineas.
At the other end of the spectrum, the largest field was 29 in 1926, when Pillion was successful at 25/1. The current maximum field size is 30.
Humble Duty recorded the greatest winning margin in the 1000 Guineas since 1900 when
scoring by seven lengths in 1970 under Lester Piggott. During the same period, six
winners have scraped home by a short-head, namely Atmah (1911), Fair Isle (1930), Highclere (1974), Nocturnal Spree (1975), Oh So Sharp (1985) and Las Meninas (1994).
The longest-priced 1000 Guineas winner was Lord Derby’s Ferry, returned at 50/1 in
1918. The shortest-priced was Crucifix, whose odds were 1/10 when taking the 1840 renewal.
A total of 79 of the 196 runnings have been won by either the favourite or a joint-
favourite. This works out as just over four in every 10 runnings being won by a
market leader. One of the true heroines of the 1000 Guineas was Tagalie, successful
in 1912 - the only winner to go on and land the Derby.
A total of 47 fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks. Neva was the first in
1817 and Kazzia the latest in 2002. Seven winners since 1900 have been trained in
Ireland - 1908 Rhodora (trained by James Allen), 1964 Pourparler (Paddy Prendergast), 1966 Glad Rags (Vincent O’Brien), 1975 Nocturnal Spree (Stuart
Murless), 1994 Las Meninas(Tommy Stack), 2005 Virginia Waters (Aidan O’Brien) and Finsceal Beo (Jim Bolger) in 2007.
There have been 15 French-trained winners since 1900 - 1929 Taj Mah (trained by Juan
Torterolo), 1932 Kandy (Frank Carter), 1935 Mesa (Albert Swann), 1947 Imprudence
(Jacques Lieux), 1950 Camaree (Alexandre Lieux), 1957 Rose Royale (Alec Head), 1958 Bella Paola (Francois Mathet), 1960 Never Too Late (Etienne Pollet), 1963 Hula Dancer
(Etienne Pollet), 1976 Flying Water (Angel Penna), 1983 Ma Biche (Criquette Head),
1988 Ravinella (Criquette Head), 1992 Hatoof 1987 Miesque (Francois Boutin),(Criquette Head) and the 2008 winner Natagora (Pascal Bary).
Henry Cecil is the most successful current trainer in the 1000 Guineas with six
wins, while Kieren Fallon has the best record of the current generation of jockeys with a quartet of victories, recording his latest success in 2005 on Virginia
Waters.
Ghanaati set a new record time for 1000 Guineas in 2009, recording 1m 34.22s which
was 0.72s faster than Finsceal Beo’s 1m 34.94s in 2007.
The present Queen owned the 1974 heroine Highclere while her father, King George VI,
saw both Hypernicum (1946)and Sun Chariot (1942) carry his colours to victory. King
George V was victorious with Scuttle in 1928 and, way back in 1896, Thais triumphed for the Prince of Wales (later to become King Edward VII).
THE StanJames.com JOCKEY CLUB STAKES
The StanJames.com Jockey Club Stakes was first run in 1894.The inaugural winner was
Isinglass, who had won the Triple Crown (2000 Guineas, Derby & St Leger) the
previous season. Persimmon, owned by the Prince of Wales (later to become King
Edward VII), won the 1896 Jockey Club Stakes. He also captured the Derby and the St Leger that year. Other Derby winners to have won the Jockey Club Stakes are Rock Sand
(1904), St Amant (1905), Lemberg (1910) and St Paddy (1961).It is no longer possible for a horse to win the Jockey Club Stakes and the Derby in the same season as, since
1963, threeyear-olds have been excluded from the Newmarket contest.
Peter Walwyn and Pat Eddery teamed up for three consecutive Jockey Club Stakes
successes in the 1970s with Orange Bay (1976), Oats (1977) and Classic Example (
1978). There has only been one dual winner in the history of the Jockey Club Stakes -Phardante in 1986 and 1987.
The great stayer Ardross won the 1982 renewal ridden by Lester Piggott. He also won
the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in 1981 and 1982, as well as finishing runner-up in the 1982 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Sir Michael Stoute leads the way among current trainers with six successes in the
Jockey Club Stakes including with Gamut in 2004.
Following the retirement in 2003 of Pat Eddery, who won six renewals of the Jockey
Club Stakes, the leading current jockey is Frankie Dettori with three successes – Roseate Tern (1990), Only Royale (1995) and Sixties Icon (2007). Jimmy
Fortune enjoyed a second victory on Bronze Cannon in 2009, having previously scored
on Alkaased in 2005. French trainer Andre Fabre has saddled two of the last four winners, Getaway (2008) and Shirocco (2006).

THE StanJames.com 2000 GUINEAS
The StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, which was founded in 1809 and has a glittering roll
of honour, celebrates its 202nd running this year. Along with the StanJames.com 1000
Guineas, also run over Newmarket’s Rowley Mile, the 2000 Guineas is one of the five English Classics, all restricted to three-year-olds - the others being the Derby and
Oaks, both over a mile and a half at Epsom Downs in early June, plus the extended 14-furlong St Leger, which takes place at Doncaster in September.
Sir Charles Bunbury, who played an important role in the development of British
racing, including overseeing the extension of the Jockey Club’s authority, was inspired to introduce the two youngest Classics - the 2000 Guineas for colts and
fillies and the 1000 Guineas for fillies only. The name derived quite literally from
the initial prize fund for the race - 2000 Guineas was in effect a guaranteed
sweepstake, irrespective of the number of subscribers. The inaugural running of the historic race was won by Wizard, who gained £1,522 for his connections, in the silks
of Yorkshire sportsman Christopher Wilson. Bill Clift steered Wizard to that success
and, five years later, completed a famous double for the same owner when partnering Charlotte to take the first running of the 1000 Guineas. Both were trained by
Tom Perren.
The StanJames.com 2000 Guineas now has a prize fund of £400,000. Clift began his
career as a shepherd boy on the estate of Lord Rockingham, where he gained early
riding experience in pony races that were organised to amuse guests at Wentworth
Woodhouse. Rockingham was so impressed by Clift’s untutored talent that he sent the youngster to join his private stable, which moved to Newmarket shortly afterwards
under the management of the Marquis’ trainer Christopher Scaife. Although Clift was
not the most stylish rider, he more than compensated with a vigorous use of the whip, which would not be tolerated today.
In the early days of the 2000 Guineas, trainers Robert Robson, Dixon Boyce and James
Edwards dominated the Classic, with 17 wins between them in the first 29 renewals. Between 1825 and 1848, Jem Robinson, who won the 2000 Guineas on a number of
occasions for the last-named pair, was successful nine times and he remains the
winning-most jockey. Legendary Malton-based trainer John Scott, who was known
as "The Wizard of the North”, keeps the accolade of being the most successful trainer of the Classic with no less than seven successes. He opened his account
with back to-back 2000 Guineas wins in 1842 and 1843, when his brother Bill Scott rode Meteor and Cotherstone to success for owner John Bowes.
The fourth Duke of Grafton and the fifth Earl of Jersey are the joint most
successful owners in the Classic’s history with five wins each. The first-named won
three consecutive renewals along with trainer Robert Robson and jockey Frank Buckle.
They began their run with Pindarrie in 1820, followed by Reginald and Pastille. In 1826, Dervise gave the owner and trainer another success, this time with John Barham Day in the saddle.
The following year, Frank Buckle was back in the plate when Turcoman landed the spoils. Buckle, who held the record of 27 Classic winners until it was surpassed
by Lester Piggott in 1984, was an apprentice at the Hon Richard Vernon’s private
yard at 1783, he weighed just 3st 13lb. At Newmarket when he rode his first winner. To end his career, almost half a century later at The fifth Earl of Jersey the
age of 65, he could still go to the scales at 7st 1lb won his first 2000 Guineas in
1831 with the James Edwards-trained Riddlesworth, who was ridden by Jem Robinson. Three years later, the owner and trainer started a four-year domination of the Classic with Glencoe. Robinson partnered four of Lord Jersey’s winners but was not on board the 1837 winner Achmet.
Since 1900, the Classic has been won by a short-head 12 times - Neil Gow (1910),
Kennymore (1914), Adam’s Apple (1927), Pay Up (1936), Kingsway (1943),
Nimbus (1949), Palestine (1950), Only For Life (1963), Kashmir II (1966),
Royal Palace (1967), Mister Baileys (1994) and, most recently, Mark Of Esteem
(1996). Henrythenavigator’s defeat of New Approach in 2008 was the first time a British Classic had been won by the narrowest margin of a nose, which was
introduced earlier the same year.
In 1930, 28 runners went to post for the 2000 Guineas which was won by Sir Hugo
Hirst’s Diolite. That remains the largest field of runners to date. Over 100 years previous to that, in both 1829 and 1830, just two runners started. Charles Marson
trained the winners of those two renewals (Patron and Augustus) for the second Marquess of Exeter. The maximum field allowed is currently 30.
The 2000 Guineas quickly became known as the best trial for the Derby. Smolensko,
who was appropriately owned by Sir Charles Bunbury, was the first horse to complete
the double when landing both Classics in 1813. Since then, 35 other horses have
managed the tremendous double, the most recent being Sea The Stars in 2009. An old adage states that the winning formula for the Derby is ‘fourth in the Guineas,
first in the Derby’. The last horse to fit such a pattern was the Paul Cole-trained
Generous in 1991, although the 2008 2000 Guineas runner-up, New Approach, relished
the step up in distance at Epsom and recorded a half-length verdict over Tartan Bearer, while in 2006 Sir Percy also came second in the Guineas before taking the Derby.
Harry Wragg followed up his younger brother Sam’s success on Highway in 1943 with
his own victory in the saddle 12 months later on Garden Path for Walter Earl. The jockey matched that feat in his role as a trainer 10 years later when he saddled
Darius to win the 2000 Guineas under Manny Mercer. Mercer, who married the trainer’s
daughter Susan, was tragically killed in a fall on his way to the start at
Ascot in 1959. He was only 29. Highway’s trainer Joe Lawson, who had won the Classic
previously with Orwell (1932) and Pay Up (1936), struck gold again in 1945 when Sir Gordon Richards’ brother Clifford partnered Court Martial to a neck success.
Runner-up on that occasion was evens favourite Dante, who was found to have
an inflamed eye days before the race and some argued that the colt couldn’t see his rival as they raced to the post.
The 2000 Guineas, together with the Derby and St Leger, form the Triple Crown and 15
horses have managed to win these three Classics, the first being the John Scott-
trained West Australian in 1853 and the most recent being the Vincent O’Brien-trained Nijinsky in 1970. One of the most outstanding Triple Crown winners was the unbeaten Ormonde in 1886.
Helen Johnson Houghton became the first female trainer to win the 2000 Guineas when
Gilles De Retz defied odds of 50/1 to land the 1956 renewal under Frank Barlow.
Johnson Houghton kept the stable at Blewbury going after the death of her husband,
trainer Major Gordon Johnson Houghton, in 1952. However, at the time, the Jockey Club did not allow women to hold a trainer’s licence, so Gilles De Retz was returned in-training by assistant Charles Jerdein but the success has since been attributed
to Johnson Houghton.
Lester Piggott, who first won the 2000 Guineas in 1957 on the Sir Noel Murless-
trained Crepello, partnered Nijinsky to win the Triple Crown in 1970. The legendary
jockey won the 2000 Guineas five times, most recently in 1992 on Rodrigo De Triano,
trained by Peter Chapple-Hyam for owner Robert Sangster. Piggott partnered 15/8
favourite Ribofilio, who controversially failed to justify favouritism in 1969. The
colt was struggling after 100 yards, came under serious pressure after a furlong
and was tailed off after three furlongs. He was eased to a canter and brought to
a standstill after four furlongs, while 15/2 chance Right Tack was the facile two and a half length winner under Geoff Lewis for Epsom-based trainer John Sutcliffe.
Initially, many believed that Ribofilio had been doped. However, tests proved negative and no explanation - either physical or temperamental - was ever given. One
of the best 2000Guineas winners of the 20th century was Tudor Minstrel, who scored
by a record eight lengths in1947. In 1961, Norman Stirk steered 66/1 outsider Rockavon to defy the odds and land the 2000 Guineas for trainer George Boyd and owner Tommy Yuill. He remains the longest priced winner of the 2000 Guineas.
The 2000 Guineas of 1971 saw a great finish between two outstanding racehorses -
Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef. It was "The Brigadier" who won by three lengths. The first two never met again, with Brigadier Gerard, who was beaten just once from 18
starts, becoming one of the greatest milers of all time, while Mill Reef was all conquering at middle distances.
The following year, High Top battled against gale force winds and driving rain to
give trainer Bernard Van Cutsem a memorable victory in the Classic, after leading
stable fancy Crowned Prince was ruled out of the Classic. Steered by Willie Carson,
Sir Jules Thorn’s colt led the 12 runners soon after leaving the stalls and stayed
on determinedly to score by half a length. Carson recorded his second of four wins in the Classic aboard Known Fact in 1980 when first past the post Nureyev was
demoted to last place following a stewards’inquiry. The latter came through the
field, causing a couple of instances of interference, with a fantastic burst of speed. However, he became the first and only horse to lose the race, giving the Jeremy Tree-trained colt success in the colours of Khalid Abdulla.
In 1975, Henry Cecil enjoyed his first Classic success when Bolkonski came up the
Rowley Mile to win the 2000 Guineas with, quiet literally, a police escort. The
stable lads’ strike of that year cast a shadow over the meeting, which was almost in jeopardy. After the race, a large group of stable lads marched in protest up the
track, surrounded by police officers, with the winning horse’s groom being carried
on their shoulders.
Two years later, an Irish victory was expected. However, the result was not exactly
the one predicted. Vincent O’Brien sent out 6/5 favourite The Minstrel, who had won the 2000 Guineas Trial at Ascot, but it was Kevin Prendergast’s 20/1 shot Nebbiolo
who landed the spoils under Gabriel Curran, with his compatriot chasing home in third. The Minstrel went on to win the Derby.
Another excellent year was 1984, when the brilliant El Gran Senor proved two and a
half lengths too strong for Chief Singer. After his Newmarket success, El Gran Senor was controversially beaten a short-head by Secreto in the Derby and finished
his career with victory in the Irish Derby, while Chief Singer became a top sprinter.
Two years later, there was another great winner in Dancing Brave. The Guy Harwood-
trained colt was unlucky not to win the Derby on his next start but, by the end of the season, he had landed the Eclipse Stakes, King George VI & Queen Elizabeth
Diamond Stakes and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
Racing pundit and presenter John McCririck elected Zafonic’s 1993 2000 Guineas
success as his most memorable race in Racing Post 100 Greatest Races. The
aforementioned duel between Brigadier Gerard and Mill Reef was 13th in the overall
list, while El Gran Senor’s win was 30th. The other two renewals of the Classic to make the cut in that exclusive roll were Tudor Minstrel’s runaway victory in 1947 and the battle between eventual winner Ormonde and Minting in 1886.
In 1994, the Mark Johnston-trained Mister Baileys, ridden by current At The Races
presenter Jason Weaver, won the 2000 Guineas by a short-head from Grand Lodge on
good to firm ground in 1m 35.08s, which remains the fastest winning time for the Classic.
The Frankie Dettori-ridden Mark Of Esteem got the best of a thrilling finish with
Even Top by a short-head in 1996 to give Godolphin a first success in the 2000
Guineas. The winner became a top miler with victories in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, where the colt was one of the rider’s “Magnificent Seven” winners.
Dettori won the Classic for the second time in 1999, when partnering Island Sands to
success for the same connections. In doing so, he equalled his father Gianfranco’s tally of two wins (Bolkonski, 1975 and Wollow, 1976) in the 2000 Guineas, both of
whom were trained by Henry Cecil for Italian owner Carlo d’Alessio.
Newmarket trainer Sir Michael Stoute took the Classic in 2000 with King's Best and
the following year with Golan. He is the joint-most successful current trainer in the 2000 Guineas, with a total of five wins. His other victories came from Shadeed
(1985), Doyoun (1988) and Entrepreneur (1997), while Aidan O’Brien has also enjoyed
a quintet of winners in the 2000 Guineas courtesy of George Washington (2006), King Of Kings (1998), Rock Of Gibraltar (2002), Footstepsinthesand,(2005) and
Henrythenavigator (2008).
Four years after training King Of Kings to victory at Newmarket, Aidan O’Brien
saddled Rock Of Gibraltar (2002) to win the 2000 Guineas by a neck from his hotly-fancied stable companion Hawk Wing. The Newmarket Classic was one of a record
seven successive Group One victories for Rock Of Gibraltar.
In 2003, the 2000 Guineas went to the Dermot Weld-trained Refuse To Bend, who
defeated Zafeen by three quarters of a length. The winner subsequently joined Godolphin, winning two further Group One contests - the Queen Anne Stakes and
Coral-Eclipse - in 2004. The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned Haafhd, trained by Barry Hills and ridden by his son Richard Hills, won the 2000 Guineas in 2004. Haafhd returned
to Newmarket that autumn to lift the Group One Emirates Airline Champion Stakes.
In 2005, the 2000 Guineas was won in emphatic style by the Aidan O’Brien-trained
Footstepsinthesand to start off Kieren Fallon’s role as stable jockey at Ballydoyle
in the best possible way. The pair followed up a year later with the brilliant George Washington, who showed a blistering turn of foot to defeat subsequent Derby
winner Sir Percy by two and a half lengths in the first running sponsored by Stan James.
The 2007 renewal of the 2000 Guineas was won emphatically by 25/1 shot Cockney
Rebel. He was trained by Geoff Huffer and ridden by Olivier Peslier, neither of whom had won the Classic before, and followed up his Newmarket success with a win in the
Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh just 21 days later, becoming the first horse
since Rock Of Gibraltar in 2002 to complete that double in the process.
The 2008 Stan James-sponsored 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator also annexed the
Irish equivalent as the first three home from Newmarket finished in the same order
as the Curragh, with New Approach second and Stubbs Art back in third. The Aidan O’Brien-trained colt went on to further emulate Rock Of Gibraltar with Group One
victories in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.
The strength of the 2008 Classic was further advertised by the runner-up New
Approach, who triumphed in the Derby and returned to Newmarket in October to smash
the 10-furlong course record with a six-length success in the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes. Raven’s Pass, fourth to Henrythenavigator in May, progressed
throughout the season, and turned the tables on his Newmarket conqueror in both the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic at Santa Anita.
Last year saw Sea The Stars record a decisive length and a half victory over
Delegator in the Classic, which was again sponsored by Stan James. Trained by John Oxx in Ireland and partnered by the veteran Michael Kinane, Sea The Stars became
the first winner since Nashwan in 1989 to go on and win the Derby and the 36th in
total. In fact, the Christopher Tsui-owned colt remained unbeaten for the rest of the season with victories in the Ec lipse Stakes at Sandown, Juddmonte
International at York, the Irish Champion Stakes and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
A once in a generation horse, Sea The Stars ended the season with an official rating of 136, named Cartier Horse of the Year and had his supporters as the greatest horse
ever seen.
Although fillies can contest the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas, they rarely take on the
colts in the Classic these days. Seven fillies have been successful in the past - Pastille (1822), Crucifix (1840), Formosa (dead-heat with the colt Moslem in (1868),
Pilgrimage (1878), Shotover (1882), the great Sceptre (1902) and Garden Path(1944).

THE StanJames.com 1000 GUINEAS
The StanJames.com 1000 Guineas is the fillies’ equivalent of the StanJames.com 2000
Guineas, both of which are run over the historic Rowley Mile on turf at Newmarket.
As with the 2000 Guineas, the Classic is so named because the original prize fund
was 1000 Guineas, though the current prize fund for both races stands at £400,000.
The youngest of all of the British Classics, the 1000 Guineas was first staged in
1814 and won by Charlotte, ridden by Bill Clift and owned by Christopher Wilson, the
same combination responsible for Wizard, the initial victor of the 2000 Guineas in
1809. Neva in 1817 became the first 1000 Guineas winner to go on and win the other
British Classic restricted to fillies, the Epsom Oaks. A total of 47 three-year-old fillies have won both the 1000 Guineas and Oaks, with Kazzia the latest in 2002.
Hannah won the 1000 Guineas in 1871 and was one of the most outstanding fillies of
her era. She progressed to claim the fillies' Triple Crown - the 1000 Guineas, Epsom Oaks and St Leger.
Another six fillies have also managed this feat - Apology, La Fleche, Pretty Polly,
Sun Chariot, Meld and Oh So Sharp. Sceptre, successful in the 1902 1000 Guineas, remains the only winner of four British Classics outright, having also succeeded
in the 2000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger. For good measure, she also finished fourth
in the only other British Classic, the Epsom Derby.
The exceptional Pretty Polly won the Newmarket Classic in 1904, scoring with ease in
a then course record time of 1m 40s when coming three lengths clear. She was successful in 22 of her 24 starts and is regarded by many as the greatest filly of all time.
One of the race’s stars was Tagalie in 1912 who has the distinction of being the only winner to go on and
land the Epsom Derby.
In 1942, the 1000 Guineas fell to Sun Chariot, owned by King George VI and she progressed to take the fillies' Triple Crown.
Meld in 1955 was the next fillies' Triple Crown heroine, while Petite Etoile, owned
and bred by the Aga Khan, was one of the best fillies of the second half of the 20th
century. She took the 1000 Guineas in 1959 and was never out of the first two while her 14 other successes included the Oaks, Sussex Stakes,Yorkshire Oaks, Champion
Stakes and two Coronation Cups.
The most recent fillies’ Triple Crown winner was in 1985 when Oh So Sharp, owned by
Sheikh Mohammed, trained in Newmarket by Henry Cecil and ridden by Steve Cauthen,
captured the three British Classics, the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and St Leger Cecil is the
most successful current trainer with six wins in the 1000 Guineas, also scoring with
One In A Million (1979), Fairy Footsteps (1981), Bosra Sham (1996),
Sleepytime (1997) and Wince (1999).
Excellent 1000 Guineas winners include Pebbles in 1984, who the following season
went on to become the first British-trained horse to win a race at North America's
Breeders' Cup meeting, while the French-trained Miesque, successful at Newmarket in 1987, subsequently landed two renewals of the
Breeders' Cup Mile,in 1987 and 1988.
Salsabil, owned by Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and trained by John Dunlop, progressed
in 1990 to capture the Epsom Oaks and proved an outstanding filly by defeating the best colts of her generation in the Irish Derby at the Curragh.
Harayir, the 1000 Guineas heroine in 1995 who was also owned by Sheikh Hamdan,
became the first winner of a British Classic race to be run on a Sunday and the race has continued to take place on that day.
Cape Verdi gave Godolphin an initial 1000 Guineas triumph in 1998, defeating
Shahtoush by five lengths before going on to run in the Epsom Derby. Kazzia provided
the second success for the international ownership entity in 2002 and she also won the Epsom Oaks and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes at Belmont Park.
The Sir Michael Stoute-trained Russian Rhythm was the winner of the 2003 1000
Guineas, defeating Six Perfections by one and a half lengths, in a tremendous renewal.
The 2004 edition went to the Mark Johnston-trained Attraction, who came back from
injury to win on her seasonal debut by half a length from Godolphin's Sundrop.
Attraction went on to win the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes later in the season - all Group One contests.
The following year, the 1000 Guineas fell in decisive fashion to Virginia Waters,
who came home two and a half lengths clear of subsequent Coronation Stakes winner
Maids Causeway. For the winning team of owners Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor,
trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Kieren Fallon, it followed the success of Footstepsinthesand in the 2000 Guineas a day earlier, making them the
first owner/trainer/jockey combination to achieve the Guineas double since King
George VI, Fred Darling and Gordon Richards with Big Game and Sun Chariot in 1942.
Kieren Fallon is the most successful of the current generation of jockeys in the
Newmarket Classic, with a quartet of victories that also includes Sleepytime (1997), Wince (1999) and Russian Rhythm (2003).
The 2006 renewal, sponsored by Stan James, provided a fairytale success for
Cambridgeshire handler Pam Sly, when Speciosa, bought for just 30,000 guineas as a
two-year-old, relished the testing conditions to storm home two and a half lengths
in front of Confidential Lady. It was the first British Classic success for a woman trainer licensed in Britain, although Helen Johnson Houghton trained Gilles De Retz,
winner of the 1956 2000 Guineas, when women were not allowed to hold a licence and
her achievement has been retrospectively acknowledged.
French handler Criquette Head-Maarek has captured the 1000 Guineas on three
occasions.
The 2007 running of the 1000 Guineas was won by the Jim Bolger-trained Finsceal Beo,
whose Irish name fittingly translates to ‘Living Legend’.
Ridden by the trainer’s son-in-law, Kevin Manning, she pulled away from the field
inside the final furlong to lead home an Irish one-two in one of the strongest renewals of the race, with the John Oxx-trained Arch Swing in second.
Such is the class of Finsceal Beo, that she went on to almost complete a famous hat-
trick of 1000 Guineas, finishing a close second in the French equivalent before
landing the Irish version within a month.
Having been successful in the Group One Cheveley Park Stakes the previous October,
Natagora returned to Newmarket for the 2008 1000 Guineas – which was again sponsored
by Stan James - and produced another stunning front-running performance to defeat
Spacious by half a length. Trained at Chantilly by Pascal Bary, the daughter of
Divine Light subsequently became the first filly for 40 years to place in the French Derby when third behind Vision D’Etat and took on both colts and older horses
when second at the highest level in both the Prix Jacques le Marois and the Prix de la Foret.
Last year’s renewal – which once again had the backing of Stan James – saw 20/1 shot
Ghanaati come home a length and a half clear of Cuis Ghaire to give Barry Hills a second victory in the Classic following Entsone Spark’s success in 1978.
It was a third victory for the jockey, the trainer’s son Richard, who had previously
scored on Harayir in 1995 and Lahan in 2000, while owner Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum was winning the race for a fifth time.

NEWMARKET FACTS AND FIGURES
Set on the Cambridgeshire/Suffolk border in the East of England, 12 miles from
Cambridge, the town of Newmarket is known as the Home of Horseracing. Rich in history, the town has a legacy of almost four centuries of racing and the “Sport
of Kings” has developed into a major industry, employing thousands of people in and around the town.
Racing’s heritage in Newmarket can be traced back to the early 17th century and the
reign of King James I. The first ever race was recorded on Newmarket Heath in 1622. According to historians, two courtiers from the court of James I raced their steeds
in a bid to win a purse of £100 and racing at Newmarket was born.
The sport flourished in the reign of King Charles II, with the first race ever run
under written rules in Britain, the Newmarket Town Plate which is still run today, being instituted by the King in 1664.
The Jockey Club was established in Newmarket in the 18th century to run the sport in
Britain and although its headquarters moved to London in the last century, the Jockey Club continues to own and manage much of the land and racing facilities in the town.
Today the town boasts two distinct racecourses, the modern and impressive Rowley
Mile and the picturesque July Course which benefited from a sympathetic back of the stands redevelopment in 2007.
Newmarket also has the world’s finest training facilities, including 50 miles of turf gallops and approximately 14 miles of artificial gallops on Newmarket Heath, the
largest area of tended grassland in the world. With over 2,500 racehorses in training at any one time, Newmarket is home to some of the biggest names in racing
with 70 licensed trainers including Sir Michael Stoute, Luca Cumani, Henry Cecil, the Maktoum Family’s Godolphin operation and Sir Mark Prescott.
Owners flock to Newmarket as a centre of excellence and leading proprietors include
Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Godolphin, Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum, Prince Khalid Abdulla and Cheveley Park Stud.
Newmarket is home to one of the world’s largest horse sales at Tattersalls and there
are more than 60 stud farms in and around the town, breeding some of the finest racehorses in the world. These include the headquarters of Sheikh Mohammed’s
international breeding operation at Dalham Hall. Britain’s National Stud, now
controlled by the Jockey Club, is also located on the edge of the town.
Newmarket is also home to the National Horseracing Museum, the Animal Health Trust
with its state-of-the-art equine facilities, and the British Racing School where the trainers, jockeys and stable lads of the future can learn their trade and develop
their skills. It is also the base for many of Britain’s top bloodstock agents and
racing organisations, including the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, European Breeders’ Fund, Horseracing Forensic Laboratory, Injured Jockeys’ Fund,
Stable Lads Welfare Trust and International Racing Bureau.
THE ROWLEY MILE RACECOURSE FACTS AND FIGURES
Newmarket is uniquely home to two separate and very distinct racecourses, The Rowley
Mile, where racing takes place in the spring and autumn, and The July Course, where
racing happens over the summer months. Rich in history, The Rowley Mile hosts the first two of the five British Classics, the StanJames.com 2000 Guineas and
the StanJames.com 1000 Guineas (the other Classics are the Derby and Oaks at Epsom
in June and the St Leger at Doncaster in September).
The course is also home to all but two of Newmarket’s Group One races. As well as
the two StanJames.com Guineas, they include the Shadwell Middle Park Stakes, the Electrolux Cheveley Park Stakes, the Jumeirah Dewhurst Stakes
and the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes.
The Rowley Mile hosts the highest class individual raceday in the British racing
calendar on Champions’ Day in October, when there are no less than six Group races,
two Group one's, three Group Twos and one Group Three, plus one of the seasons most competitive handicaps, the totesport.com Cesarewitch.
The course takes its name from Charles II’s hack, ‘Old Rowley’. Charles also
inherited the same nickname from his courtiers, albeit behind his back. The first race in Britain to be run under written rules, the Town Plate, was instituted during
his reign in 1664 and continues to be run as a special event. He personally rode to
victory in the race in 1671. The track is two and a quarter miles long, with a right-handed bend after one mile.
A unique feature of racing on The Rowley Mile is that every race of 10 furlongs or
less is run on a completely straight track. Being straight and wide with undulations and an uphill finish, the straight mile on which the StanJames.com 2000 and
StanJames.com 1000 Guineas take place provides a demanding test for horse and rider.
To win, a horse must show a combination of speed, stamina and resilience, while jockeyship and judgement of pace are crucial.
Facilities at The Rowley Mile have been dramatically improved in recent years, most
notably with the construction of the Millennium Grandstand which offers state-of-the-art facilities in a very stylish environment.
With its spectacular views over the Suffolk countryside, the Millennium Grandstand
was opened by Her Majesty The Queen on 2000 Guineas Day in the year 2000. With a spectator capacity of 10,000 and a 400-seater, tiered restaurant, the
Grandstand impressively meets the requirements of the 21st century racegoer.
