JOHN FRANCOME, known to all Channel4 horseracing viewers, now retired from professional jump race riding. John is a great advocator of the training and education of young jockeys.

"I am pleased to be the Ambassador for Racing Excellence. Good riding skills and learning to use your hands and heels instead of relying on the whip is something that I am passionate about. These training races provide an invaluable opportunity to develop these skills and I would encourage any young jockey to take part. ENDS

TURFCALL'S WARNING: The British Horseracing Authority Regulation Parties (BHA) have a lot of catching up to do in this department, due to the fact that they are nearly all ‘Bloodhorse Illiterate.’

WIMBLEDON TENNIS: All the young ones in Britain who show particular tennis talent from an early age, receive ’Tennis Coaching’ which has long been vital to their ongoing development and success. Such tennis coaching in Britain has been ongoing since 1946 the aim being to start out and play at Junior Wimbledon.

World Ranking British Tennis Stars to name just two here Andy Murray and Tim Henman will both have received such ‘Coaching’ and from an early age. Coaching that will continue on throughout their tennis careers, world wide.

This however has not been the case in British horseracing, whose preference has always been to chuck the young ones in at the deep end, and leave them to either sink or swim, a harsh reality where the horses suffer the consequences, mostly, in silence.
