FRANCE GALOP MEDIA RELEASE

Nineteen runners in 88th running of the 2009

Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe

Aidan O’Brien withdrew Johann Zoffany at the runners’ declaration stage on Friday morning to leave 19 horses in the 88th renewal of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1 – 2,400m). The richest turf race in the World with €4m in prize money, this edition has attracted horses and people (owners, breeders, trainers and jockeys) from 12 countries: Brazil, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Russia, Spain, Sweden, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and USA.

Tullamore is the very first Czech runner in the World Championship event while Brazilian star Hot Six will try to better the record of the last Brazilian runner, Much Better, unplaced in 1994. The Russian star Magomet Kappuchev will ride The Bogberry, owned by Russian Jockey Club chairman Sergey Efros and trained in France by Alain de Royer Dupre.

With such a large field at the start, the stalls position will be decisive for some of the runners and the draw, made on Friday morning at France Galop HQ near Paris, was more important than ever.

Six for the Stars

The favourite Sea The Stars, winner of five Group 1 races this season including the Epsom Derby, was drawn 6. He’s trained in Ireland by John Oxx (winner in 2000 with Sinndar). Sea the Stars’s dam Urban Sea won the 1993 renewal of the race. She was owned by David Tsui, from Hong Kong, whose son Christopher now owns Sea The Stars.

The favourite’s rider, Mick Kinane, has won the race twice - in 1989 with Carroll House and in 1999 with Montjeu. A good omen?

The second favourite Fame And Glory, also trained in Ireland by Aidan O’Brien (winner in 2007 with Dylan Thomas), was beaten by Sea The Stars in the Epsom Derby. He’s by Montjeu, the 1999 Arc winner, and will leave from stall 10, just like his father 10 years ago.

Aidan O’Brien, trainer of Fame And Glory, was quoted saying : “He had a big long break after the Irish Derby and we were sorry the clash with Sea The Stars didn’t materialise in that race. He then had two months off before the Irish Champion and he was only just ready to start back. We were delighted with him because when you see a horse that gets a mile and a half like him, yet can quicken up as he did in the Champion Stakes, then you’d have to be really happy and looking forward to his next run. The good thing in the Champion is that Mick (Kinane on Sea The Stars) didn’t lock horns with him early and so he didn’t get hammered in the straight. If he had then he could have gone backwards not forward after the race but as it is we’re really looking forward to the clash on Sunday.”

Second in 2007 and 2008, Youmzain will try to improve his record with 2007 winning rider Kieren Fallon aboard despite an unfavourable 1 draw: “It’s certainly better than being drawn in stall 19!” joked Bruce Raymond, owner Jaber Abdullah’s racing manager. “It’s a bit tight on the inside but the favourite is drawn six and I would definitely prefer a low draw. He has run well from a low draw on his previous two starts in the race and an inside draw should suit him - he travels well under Kieren Fallon and it should give him options. He has worked once with a visor on and he went very nicely. Bearing in mind that he has been on the gallops for six years, we put a visor on him and he worked exceptionally well. Hopefully they can add another length to his race at Longchamp. Kieren makes a big difference to Youmzain because he rides him with a lot of confidence. Ideally, I would have rather seen a bit more cut in the ground but it’s the same for most of the runners. He has run well on all types of ground but all of his wins have come on soft going.”

This year’s King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner and last season’s Breeders’ Cup Turf and St Leger hero Conduit will bid to give his trainer Sir Michael Stoute and owners Ballymacoll Stud a long-coveted first Arc success. The son of Dalakhani is drawn in stall 12.

“We would have liked to have been drawn a little bit lower but can’t do anything about that,” said Stoute. “We’re very pleased with his preparation and he’s in good form but this is a high-class Arc. We’re very happy with him and hope he puts his best foot forward. Whatever the ground, that shouldn’t be a problem and we will hope for the best.”

Dar Re Mi will be bidding to make amends for her disqualification in the Prix Vermeille on her last start. Her trainer John Gosden said: “She is fine and in good form. She is in stall 2 - the pacemakers are all out on the outside. Presumably they will jump and come across. We will just have to see what happens and Jimmy (Fortune) will ride as he finds it. She is drawn towards the inside. I am happy she will jump and use her stride which she enjoys doing. The size of the field will be a problem for everybody. She is capable of coming from off the pace and she is capable of making her own running - she has done it all. She is versatile on any ground. She is taking on the colts and we have to be realistic that we have previously been racing in fillies’ Group Ones.”

The French team

The French fancies have not been that lucky as far as the draw is concerned. The unbeaten 3yo filly Stacelita was drawn 16. Michel Zerolo, representing the American owner of the French Oaks winner Martin Schwartz, said: “It is far from ideal. A good pace is expected though and things could develop favourably for us but we will need an extra pinch of luck here.”

The Grand Prix de Paris winner Cavalryman, trained by record man Andre Fabre (8 wins in the Arc) for Dubai-based Godolphin stable, was drawn 19, outside the whole field. Godolphin racing manager, Simon Crisford, declared: "Cavalryman hasn’t got a great draw but hopefully over a mile and a half it will not play against him too much. Andre has been happy with his progress leading into the race and I don’t think the good going will be a problem - he has form on all types of ground. Obviously it is going to be a huge test for him and whatever he achieves on Sunday, we are looking forward to seeing him in the blue silks next summer."

The 2008 French Derby winner Vision d’Etat, fifth in the 2008 Arc, will start from stall 9: “It is not bad at all,” said his trainer Eric Libaud. “Meanwhile, I wish everybody was going on the course to sing for rain! The ground at Ascot was good when Vision d’Etat won the Prince of Wales’s Stakes in June but a bit of rain would help. All I ask for is a genuinely good to soft ground so that everybody gives its best. Vision d’Etat came back a bit sore from his last prep race but he’s completely recovered now. He’s bounced back and looks at least as good as he was before Ascot.”
