ASCOT WINNERS ROYALLY REWARDED IN LATEST CARTIER RACING AWARDS STANDINGS

ASCOT WINNERS ROYALLY REWARDED IN LATEST CARTIER RACING AWARDS STANDINGS

Royal Ascot, the most majestic of English sporting occasions, last week proffered a typically prodigious portion of pageantry, grandeur and sartorial splendour alongside a feast of top-class horseracing, leaving Cartier Racing Awards observers brimming with anticipation at what further treats might await during the coming months.

The Cartier Racing Awards recognise excellence in horseracing and the awards are the sport’s equivalent of the Oscars. They are determined by points earned in Pattern races combined at the end of the season with the opinions of a panel of racing journalists, as well as votes from readers of the Racing Post and The Daily Telegraph. This is a system which has accurately rewarded supreme excellence over the years.

European horseracing’s most prestigious accolades will be presented for the 20th time on November 16, during a glittering ceremony before an invited audience in the ballroom of London’s Dorchester Hotel.

The Cartier Racing Awards were established in 1991 to recognise the achievements of racehorses in Europe. There is also the Cartier/Daily Telegraph Award Of Merit for the person or persons who, in the opinion of the special 18-strong Cartier Jury, has/have done most for European racing and/or breeding either over their lifetime or within the past 12 months.

The Richard Hannon-trained crack three-year-old miler Canford Cliffs was among the stars of the five-day meeting and added a little extra shine to his shimmering reputation with a dazzling length victory over stable companion and StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas runner-up Dick Turpin (72 points) in the St James’s Palace Stakes on June 15.

The Classic-winning Tagula colt, triumphant in the Abu Dhabi Irish 2,000 Guineas, emphatically reversed form with StanJames.com 2,000 Guineas hero Makfi (equal with Investec Derby winner Workforce on 56 points) in taking the Group One prize under a confident Richard Hughes ride and leaping to the head of both the Cartier Three-Year-Old Colt and Cartier Horse of The Year categories with 108 points.

Lope De Vega, imperious when adding the Group One Prix du Jockey Club to his earlier Poule d’Essai des Poulains win, is second in both divisions with 98 points as he prepares for a mooted head-to-head with the Freddie Head-trained Goldikova in the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville in August.

The great Goldikova (64), the 2009 Cartier Older Horse heroine, was also in supreme form on day one of the Royal meeting, June 15, as she clinched a ninth career Group One success when holding on for a neck verdict over the Hannon-trained Paco Boy (64) in the Queen Anne Stakes over the straight mile.

But, for the moment at least, that pair trail the Andre Fabre-trained Byword in the Cartier Older Horse category. Owner Khalid Abdullah’s colt was half a length behind Goldikova in the Group One Prix d’Ispahan on May 23, but the rising star landed a smooth success under Maxime Guyon in the Group One Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot on June 16, to take his points haul to 80.

With Royal Ascot legend Yeats, a four-time winner of both the Gold Cup and the Cartier Stayer Award, having retired to stud, the door was left open for a new contender to lay down a gauntlet in the division. The Dermot Weld-trained Rite Of Passage (48), placed in Grade One company over hurdles at the Cheltenham Festival in March and sent off a 20/1 shot for the two and half mile showpiece on Thursday, June 17, clinched pole position with a battling neck verdict over another Irish-trained runner Age Of Aquarius (28).

The Cartier Sprinter Award is invariably a hotly contested prize and this year looks like being no exception with Equiano and Starspangledbanner currently sharing top spot with 48 points. The Barry Hills-trained Equiano landed a second Group One King’s Stand Stakes victory on June 15, having prevailed in the five-furlong contest in 2008, while Australian import Starspangledbanner impressed in the Group One Golden Jubilee over six furlongs on Saturday, June 19, for trainer Aidan O’Brien.

The James Fanshawe-trained Society Rock, runner-up in the Golden Jubilee Stakes, has 24 points, while Markab, second in the King’s Stand Stakes, has 20 points.

The O’Brien-trained Lillie Langtry suffered a potentially career-ending injury after the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf in November but bounced back to her best with success in the Group One Coronation Stakes at the Royal Meeting on June, 18. The Danehill Dancer filly has 48 points in the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly division, the equal of Investec Oaks winner Snow Fairy.

The 2009 Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly Award went to Special Duty and the Criquette Head-Maarek-trained dual Classic winner heads the Cartier Three-Year-Old Filly category with 98 points, but closing in on her is fellow French-trained contender Sarafina. Alain de Royer-Dupre’s charge now has 64 points after complementing her Group One Montjeu Coolmore Saint-Alary victory with Classic success in the Group One Prix de Diane at Chantilly on June 13. Abu Dhabi Irish 1,000 Guineas heroine Bethrah has 52 points.

Royal Ascot offers the first major test for the season’s two-year-olds and the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing-owned Approve impressed when winning the Group Two Norfolk Stakes for trainer William Haggas on June 17. But perhaps more stunning was the victory of the Richard Hannon-trained Strong Suit who overcame significant interference to land the Group Two Coventry Stakes in the dying strides on June 15. Those two are locked together on 16 points at the head of the Cartier Two-Tear-Old Colt category.

Maqaasid, trained by John Gosden, has a clear lead in the Cartier Two-Year-Old Filly division after she overhauled Meow (8) to win the Group Two Queen Mary Stakes on June 16. Also on eight points is Group Three Albany Stakes winner Memory, trained by Hannon for Highclere Thoroughbred Racing.

Harry Herbert, Cartier’s racing consultant, commented today: “Royal Ascot, as always, has served up a thrilling five days of racing with stunning performances mingled with the heroic.

“The week’s results have certainly shaken up the 2010 Cartier Racing Awards standings and we now have a slightly clearer picture as to who could ultimately prove to be the season’s standout performers.

“We witnessed some exciting displays last week from Goldikova, Canford Cliffs, Rite Of Passage, Starspangledbanner and Byword among others and, given the excellent array of talent before us this season, I think we are all perfectly justified in anticipating more stunning races in the coming weeks at the Curragh, Sandown Park and during Newmarket’s July Festival.”
