NEWMARKET RACECOURSES TATTERSALLS MILLIONS RACES FOR 2 YEAR OLDS 2010/2011

NEWMARKET RACECOURSES HUGE NUMBERS OF TWO-YEAR-OLDS GO IN SEARCH OF TATTERSALLS MILLIONS

Horses ranging in yearling price from 5,000 guineas through to 700,000 guineas remain in the Tattersalls Millions races after this week’s scratchings stage as they bid for the great rewards available in the most extensive sales race series ever staged in the northern hemisphere.

The eight races, all run at Newmarket’s two racecourses, offer total prize money of £1.75 million and are held between 28th August this year and the end of June, 2011. They are open to graduates of Book 1 of last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.

The most valuable race in the series is the £500,000 Tattersalls Millions 2YO Trophy, open to colts, gelding and fillies, and staged at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course on Saturday, 2nd October. The seven-furlong contest has a massive 353 entries remaining.

Among the least-expensive horses entered are Child Bride, winner of her only start for trainer Paul Cole, who realised 5,000 guineas in October, while - at the other end of the scale - the 700,000 guineas sale topper, Rudolf Valentino, is also engaged having won a Naas maiden for trainer Aidan O’Brien earlier this month before going on to be third in the Group Three Anglesey Stakes at the Curragh.

Although many of the stars to have passed through last year’s Tattersalls October Yearling Sale have still to show their full potential, some have already made their mark at a high-level this season and remain in the Tattersalls Millions.

Among these are the unbeaten filly Memory, a 72,000 guineas yearling, who is antepost favourite for next year’s 1,000 Guineas following her victory in the Group Two Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes at Newmarket’s Champagne Lanson July Festival.

Jan Vermeer’s three-parts sister Together won the Group Three Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown last week while other classy fillies engaged include the Richard Hannon-trained Date With Destiny, George Washington’s only foal, who could bid to win back her 320,000 guineas yearling cost. Meanwhile, the Luca Cumani-trained Khor Sheed, an easy winner of the Listed totesport.com Empress Stakes at Newmarket, cost what now looks a bargain 42,000 guineas as a yearling.

Approve, winner of the Group Two Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, Formosina, who captured the Group Two Railway Stakes at the Curragh, runaway Listed winner Zoffany and the Richard Hannon-trained Zebedee, a recent Sandown Listed scorer who looks set to start a warm order for next week’s Group Three Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood, are among the colts to have made their mark in black-type company so far.

Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented: “With the first race in the eight-race £1,750,000 Tattersalls Millions series just over a month away, it is exciting to see the number of top class two-year-olds out there who are graduates of last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 1 with eight Group/Listed winners already including Memory, the current favourite for next year's 1,000 Guineas.

“The new format for the series, with eight races and entry costs of only £4,000 really hit a chord with owners and it was very gratifying to see the number of two-year-olds staying in at the latest scratchings stage.

"With Book 1 of the October Yearling Sale starting on 5th October, it is worth noting that five of the eight Group/Listed winners were sold for 72,000 guineas or less, demonstrating that the sale is not only Europe's Premier Yearling Sale but also one that provides great value for money."
