RETRAINING OF RACEHORSES
Founded in 2000, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British horseracing’s official Charity for the welfare of horses which have retired from racing. It raises funds from within racing to provide and maintain facilities for the care, retraining and re-homing of former racehorses, and to raise awareness of the suitability of the retrained racehorse for other equine careers. RoR supports four retraining centres nationwide, and works closely with the sport horse organisations and media, to promote the adaptability of racehorses to other equestrian activities with a programme of competition sponsorship now well established.

In addition, RoR holds clinics across the country to help owners look after and train their former racehorses. Visit www.ror.org.uk for more information on RoR, its events, looking after and retraining a former racehorse, and many heart-warming success stories.

HOT TOPIC

‘STARSPANGLEDBANNER JOHNNY MURTAGH’ WIN THE DARLEY JULY CUP YESTERDAY 2/1f by an - oh - so – close – neck - from ‘EQUIANO MICHAEL HILLS’ 12/1.

A RACING POST REPORT BY NICK PULFORD 4:00 PM 9 JULY 2010
Murtagh hit with costly six-day suspension
“JOHNNY MURTAGH is set to miss the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot this month after being handed a six-day ban for careless riding following his winning ride on Starspangledbanner in the Darley July Cup.

“Starspangledbanner, the 2-1 favourite, took the Group 1 prize at Newmarket on Friday thanks to a driving finish from Murtagh, but there was a sting in the tail for the jockey when the stewards banned him for his manoeuvre in taking Starspangledbanner to the far rail after coming out of stall 11.

“The ban starts on July 23, two days before the King George, and will also rule Murtagh out of the first two days of Glorious Goodwood the following week.
Murtagh's manoeuvre early in the race, taking Starspangledbanner to the left to get to the rail, appeared to hamper Prime Defender and caused a knock-on effect of interference in the pack Johnny Murtagh: "way over top"

“The jockey was surprised at the length of ban imposed, saying: "I can't understand it, six days is way over the top."

“Aidan O'Brien, trainer of Starspangledbanner, suggested there was no pre-race plan to grab the far rail.

"Johnny is a brilliant, experienced jockey. The stalls were positioned towards the far side and the natural way to go was towards the closest rail. It is never a disadvantage for a front-runner to have a rail to run against," O'Brien said on Racing UK.

"I haven't seen the race again, but it looked to me as if he jumped and moved across when it was clear."

“Murtagh was expected to ride Irish Derby winner Cape Blanco in the King George, but O'Brien will have to make fresh plans unless Murtagh makes a successful appeal against the ban. ”

RACING POST REPORT by GRAHAM DENCH SATURDAY 10th JULY 2010.
“Hughes has a week off to avoid ban before Glorious Goodwood Meeting. (Tuesday July 27 over 5 days to Saturday July 31st 2010.) “

“RICHARD HUGHES has opted to take a week off from race riding in order to ensure he does not miss Glorious Goodwood through suspension. ”
