Cheltenham racecourse is pleased to announce that the £150,000 Grade Three December Gold Cup, one of the highlights of The International on Saturday, December 11, will this year be run as the Vote A P Gold Cup.

No other Jump jockey can come close to matching the achievements of A P McCoy, who has ridden over 3,000 winners and been crowned Champion Jockey on 15 occasions. As the home of Jump racing, Cheltenham is firmly behind the drive to highlight McCoy's case to receive the coveted BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award.

Managing Director Edward Gillespie said: "A P has won every challenge Jump racing has to offer. This is a rare opportunity for our serial Champion to compete against the best of other sports. He deserves all possible support we can give him".


The winner of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year Award will be announced at Birmingham’s LG Arena on Sunday, December 19 and viewers will have the chance to vote for their favourite during the show, which will be broadcast live on BBC One, BBC Radio 5 Live and the BBC Sport website.

McCoy partnered Northern Starlight to success in the 1998 renewal of this two mile, five furlong, handicap chase and he looks set to have a strong chance of a second victory with the J P McManus-owned quartet of Dancing Tornado, Finger On the Pulse, Jered and Sunnyhillboy among the 30 remaining entries.
